Door weatherstrip replacement/installation

Hi all,

Looking to replace my weatherseals on both sides as they are gnarled up and have scratched my windows.

Item in question is labelled 2 in the image at this link

Long story short but I have had an absolute nightmare trying to track these down, seem they are not being manufactured anymore (for the time being at least).
Sytner have none in stock and no expected date, which means they have no fabricator, or so I'm told.
I tried ordering on LLLParts and they cancelled the order a day later also citing no availability.

Ended up finding what seems to be a brand new OS (right-side) weatherstrip and awaiting delivery of the NS one (thanks eBay)

Problem I have no is I cannot for love nor money find any kind of guide or instructions for how to install them.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks in advance

From memory, if you pop the rubber off at the ‘webbed’ end that sits down toward the lock mech, the strip is just held in place with metal clips which pop/lever upwards

The doorcard has to come off to replace these if im not mistaken. Purchased the set from BMW itself 3 years ago, never installed it because i didnt find the time  Didn't realize they stopped producing them.

I'll buy 'em off you if you're selling :D

Thanks for the reply though this is most useful

I would like to help you out by selling them, but I am actually going to get the job done once my battery is swapped :D Since i have some work to do on the door that requires unplugging the airbag.

It's all good.

I replaced my driver's side one last week and it was a bloody nightmare. Easily the toughest job to get right so far along my journey.

If you're doing it yourself, buy a set of replacement clips off before you begin.

Yes exactly. Mainly the plastic ones. The metal ones on mine seemed to be fine, the plastic ones are brittle as hell, especially if the door card has never been removed.

Edit to add: The plastic ones cost me about £1.00 each from my local BMW dealership. From memory, there are 8-9 of them per side.

Thanks! Had to remove the entire door card. No problems there other than a few broken clips. I'll replace them all at some point.
The issue I had was getting the weatehr strip to reseat properly. My god was it a pain in the arse! I've got lumpy bits all over the shop :headbang:

Did you spray some water on the weather strip to lubricate it? I haven't tried this method yet but I'm not looking forward to it based on your experience :D

No, but, with hindsight, I would probably be more inclined to use silicone spray...

You're making me think I should start over

I learned my lesson to not get silicon spray anywhere near the weather strip  ends up seeping into where the window slides, smearing the windows with every use.

Maybe for others reading this thread, water is a great lubricant for rubber as it can evaporate after fitting. Got this idea through some bicycle building work and later saw in the BMW workshop manual above, they also suggest it
