Door vapour barriers

First point... HOW BLOODY MUCH FOR A BIT OF FOAM??!

Okay, so now that's out of my system

At some point the window regulators have been replaced, but whoever did it seemed to consider ripping the foam membrane apart and sticking it together with masking tape to be "done properly" :headbang:

So I'll be replacing them, but Christ on a bike they're expensive at £40 a pop.

My question is this.... Can I just dump them and get some waterproofing plastic sheet instead? I can't see why it wouldn't work, assuming of course it's sealed correctly, and it's a damn sight cheaper than the OEM foam. I'll be adding sound deadening to the doors at the same time, so extra noise from removing foam should be more than compensated for.

So yeah, DPM plastic sheeting, suitable? Can nab some offcuts from work for free, which are more than big enough to do the doors, and will also get some butyl tape to seal it up, I assume some will be needed round all screw holes and also perhaps around the support bracket for the handle... It would be much easier to cut round that and seal it at the base rather than try working a flat sheet round it.

Only reason I assume this is fine is, frankly, most cars I've seen use a thin plastic sheet rather than the BMW option of sculpted foam. So it clearly works fine!

I need to get one of these also for the passenger door and just cant bring myself to pay that much for a piece of foam. :?

I tried with the plastic sheet idea .... didn’t work . Bought a new one from Bmw and some proper tape( bytule?) . Problem solved . I wouldnt waste your time , just get the right part and be done with it

Any reason why? Plenty of non-BMW cars use a simple plastic vapour barrier sheet. Is it just the awkward fitment? I would be using butyl tape to seal too.

It’s the shape .... I would have thought it could be done with some sheeting but I didn’t have much luck and didn’t want to keep going back to do the same job over again ... and the thought of getting a footwell full of water would keep me up at night

The genuine Bmw foam one is contoured to all the little recesses and fits perfect obviously. For £40 it’s a rip off but ha ho life goes on

Figured, hence my consideration of cutting out a hole where the door handle bracket is and just sealing that separate. Might not be pretty but it's free and I really do not want to spend £80 on some thin foam sheets

Right, that's it, I pulled the trigger and ordered one  €43.40 over here. Full on robbery but like you say it will stop water getting in...I'm trying to justify it to myself :?

Should anyone need it this is the passenger side part 51487016655, I think the driver side is 51487016656
