Popped one of the grills off to see what was behind it. Found this! hard piece of plastic?
Should there be a speaker there?

yep thats normal, u only get speakers there if you had the expensive upgrade stereo,

where you get seperate ap and big speakers behind seats where the cubby holes are
 
4" coaxial speakers in these is a very quick and worthwhile upgrade. Some good how-to's on here where you remove the doorcard and simply tap into the tweeter wiring.

The blank you see is just a plate held on with 3 nuts. You can easily either fit genuine BMW speakers that bolt onto the 3 lugs or any suitable sized (and depth) aftermarket speaker.

Did this years ago and a great mod
 
I used infinity 4" coaxials that cost about £45 iirc. I think the main thing is that the soundstage is lifted and the vocals etc are fired right at you - instead of coming from down by your feet and being muffled by your feet and legs.

Yes, there's an in-line capacitor acting as a passive high-pass filter in the tweeter wiring - it's close to the tweeter so you tap the signal prior to this
 
i keep telling myself im going to upgrade the standard stereo/speakers but not got round to it.... if i can add some simple standard speakers into the door cards and its just a case of plug and play.... then im on it :D
 
Yes definitely do it mate.

I used Perry's guide - Sorry I didn't give you credit Perry, I have a terrible memory! It's also worth doing the sound deadening, it makes a real difference to road noise and gives the doors a nice solid 'clunk' when they shut.
 
hmmm sounds like a nice winter project in my cousins barn/workshop on a rainy day :thumbsup:

cant wait, did you just use bmw replacements?

when it comes to speakers etc im not that sharp so dont wanna go ordering the wrong sizes/types/ohms etc etc

really wish I had done this , I just replaced my speakers with better quality 2 ways (and a more powerful HU) but they still sound rubbish due to speaker location....cant face swapping them out again and then re-wiring for 3 way, may be next year.

Are you sure it is tuned properly?

I'm running a 2 way setup in mine and wouldn't ever dream of wanting a mid in the mix.
 
Hi Neil, i'm no expert I took audio shop recommendation on the speakers and installed them, its better then stock but it sounds "wrong" or muddy for lack of a better description with all the sound coming from the floor....if you have any tips on tuning it, gratefully received.

Have you the pos an negative on the new speakers the right way round if not there'll be out of phase with the rest of the system

I did think of that and double checked (also tried both ways) , but no its correct.
