Door respray costs?

I'd quite like my passenger door resprayed as in certain lights it's possible to see that the colour doesn't quite match as it's had a poor paint job in the past, also there's a run in the lacquer too, none of these were bad enough for me to notice when I viewed the car though :roll:

I've just been quoted £660 (inc vat) which is higher than I thought it was going to be, the chap explained that with the silver you can't paint to an edge but have to blend over the adjacent panels & then lacquer the whole side, so the mirror, door handle & aerial etc have to come out.

Does the estimate seem reasonable & does the work involved sound accurate? - any advice appreciated, also any recommended body shops around Bournemouth/Poole area.
 
Seems a little high, but the statement about blending in is correct and lacquer is correct. Not sure you spray the entire side with lacquer, but enough to blend.

Just get another quote and see some work both have done to decide.

Accident repair centres can be good as all they do all day is repair and blend panels.

I'd estimated in my head around the £300 mark so was a bit surprised when it was more than double, however, maybe I'm just out of touch when it comes to bodywork, the price did include taking out a couple of minor car park dings, both of which are in the area that would be blended so of no great hardship to them.

I will get a couple more quotes, although if they are all around the same price mark I'd have to question whether I can live with it, most people only seem to notice the colour difference if I point it out to them, my wife & car enthusiast neighbour still cant see it but it's obvious to me & therein lies the problem :?

I didn't notice it until you pointed it out Tony, I'd been commenting on how "mint" it looked! And looks! But, I know it is personal and that's all that matters, I'm not happy with the refurb job on my allows, and there are a couple of dings in mine that only I notice but it is annoying.

As above with the blending too. Costing, I can see it perhaps see it being close to that to be honest, if it is a decent garage and aim to deliver complete OEM finish.

Mate,if you can afford it get it done otherwise you'll just keep looking at it the whole time and it will niggle you.It doesn't seem a bad price to me considering work involved as long as door handle ,trim etc is removed and not just masked up.I understand the blending process but to me they may as well paint and lacquer the whole side as sometimes even a blend and especially on silver can be seen.
 
Here it is, although I have to say it does look particularly bad in this photo, I have looked at plenty of Zed pictures & whether its all the angles or not & how the light strikes the car but a fair few look like the doors don't look the same colour as the wings.

I think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet as you are right Tom & Lynchy, It'll always bug me (just like the scratched dash trim used to do Tom :) )

That photo has played a bit of a trick hasn't! the runs could be improved by getting someone to flat (wet sand) and polish. Otherwise the respray will get it perfect all round!

If it's just the door that has been painted you might want to consider finding a door from a scrapper and doing a straight swap.

I had a similar issue with a front wing that had been repaired. They only painted the wing which like you I didn't notice until I got it home. :headbang:

Found a wing on ebay for £160 in the right colour and checked it with a paint gauge to ensure it was factory paint. Also done the same with my boot as I wanted to remove the OEM spoiler. Respray would have been required so it was cheaper to buy a boot in the right colour.
 
Whilst I'm quite a practical kind of person I'm not sure that replacing body panels is something I'm capable of, bearing in mind that I'd have to pay someone to do this plus the replacement door & new door membrane etc I think the respray route is the most practical option.

Tom, if it was just the run in the lacquer I would have paid a bodyshop to do that, but as the colour is off anyway I might as well get it sorted properly.

I'm pretty sure the door hasn't been replaced as the fixing bolts don't show any marks of being removed/refitted, I'm guessing this was done by one of these small repair places that do minor dents or something, no self respecting bodyshop would send it out with the run in the lacquer.

Didn't I read somewhere that getting the door handle off is a royal PITA?, needing a specialist tool or tools to do this?, not thinking for myself but the bodyshop did say that it would have to come out for the respray, the original quote is beginning to sound not quite so bad now.

No problem, just throwing in some ideas. I wanted to keep factory paint also, just the OCD in me :lol:
 
The expensive place near me is about £200 per panel which I thought was very expensive. The guy I normally use would do a door with all the blending for around £100 and you wouldn't be able to tell it had been painted.

£600 plus is just taking the piss.

Always good to have different opinions,paint is the only thing I can give advice on.Everything else I'm s**t :lol:

Encouraging to hear, although that does seem very cheap, would have thought the materials would have been quite expensive on their own.

I'll try a couple more places & see if I can work out what the average is for this/combined with some examples of their work, I want a top notch job - basically indistinguishable from a factory finish (so that's be quite orangey peeley then :D )
 
This seems expensive.

After mine was keyed I was told the same thing, it can't just be painted in it needs to be blended across the wing and the door so it's not so noticable.

I was quoted £350 for the front wing and the drivers door.

If that's a particularly bad picture then ok but I know what you mean, you know it's there, you notice it and it's annoying (as I do the new dings on mine now and the key mark everytime I wash/polish/look at it).
 
i was quoted about 350 to 400 to have a dent removed and all the associated respraying.... he said he would have to blend over panels.
 
I paid £170 for my lotus Elise door to be resprayed, it matched very well & they didn't do any "blending" involving painting half of the car, agree with the above comment about taking the piss :x
