Door popping open

So this started to happen more recently. As I would be driving, if I hit a bump, nothing violent, my driver door (Left) would unlatch. :o It would happen at speeds like 50-70, with the door locked and unlocked.

Just cruising along when all of a sudden the door opens, but not all the way, just to that spot where it wiggles but doesn't open or close. :headbang:

Any ideas?

:o Eek..!! Get it in to the stealer or a good indi for door latch alignment or possible replacement..!!! Sounds dangerous and not worth messing about with.

Ok, stay calm, I used to get this problem . . . if i didn't close the door hard enough. Seriously, I had the same problem for a few days, so started slamming the door shut (mine was passenger side, girlfriend had a bit of a shock first time round!) and I have never had the problem since. When it happens dont panic, it will never open completely, and even if it did, the door wouldn't be able to open at speeds of over 15-20mph. It's possibly not aligned by a few mm. Need to have mine looked at really, but as it hasn't happened for 2-3months, I haven't bothered, been to france and back no trouble at all. :driving:

Oh, it only shocked me the first time, but subsequent was only a little surprise. Could be me not slamming the door hard enough, but i'd rather not "slam" it.

Would it be hard to view and/or realign it myself?

You don't "slam" the door, but those things close firmly, tolerances are fairly tight. The window should move down a fraction of an inch, then move up to seat tightly if/when you close it completely.

It certainly wont fly wide open as it has a secondary safety catch, and of course unless braking or turning at low speed air pressure holds it too, but it needs adjustment. Simply loosen the 2 torx headed bolts slightly on the door striker plate (The silver 'loop' on the door jamb) and move the plate a mm or so.

Mine shuts with no more than a single finger push on the door handle. Slamming is wrong and can only damage things if done repeatedly.

I avoid slamming at any cost, and the window does make its move. Open the door and play with the latch, thats the control for the window... kinda cool how it works.

I'll look into this CJ, didn't think it would be too difficult.

Thanks all for the info!!

Had this with my 98 Z3M when I hit a bump when cornering very hard. I'm guessing that there was enough chassis flex to allow a poorly adjusted latch to release. Not had the problem with the Z4, but the chassis is stiffer. I would ask the dealer to inspect the latch.
