Door open and closing feeling!

Hey Guys. Its been a while since I visited these forums. life happened!

Anyways while on my ever lasting hunt for little bits and pieces for my z4 I came across one being stripped for spares down the road from me. Its a 2011 model 2L turbo.

Now what I noticed when I opened the doors is how solid they felt! It had that new car feeling to it! one click not one click followed by a few micro little clicks and rattles etc.
My question is, what causes a door to become a little bit loose feeling over time. My car is a 2009 Z4 35i, its in extremely good condition now however I didn't know my doors had issues till I opened this z4's doors. The best way to describe it is that it felt as if it has thick foam padding on the inside and all the latches etc are 100% tight with no play on anything.

How do I make my doors like that? small details like this can change a car!

The original Z4 did not come with any sound deadening material to cut down on weight (or so I was told)

However, I bought what can only be described as a sheet of sticky backed plasticine... off with the door card & membrane.

The Z then shut like my old AUDI, with a real solid feeling thud... & all I did was add this sheet of sound deadening ‘stuff’’... might just need some extra aftermarket fixing

Hmmmm I was wandering if that had something to do with it. I will need to take the door card off and check out whats happening under there, will first order the sound deadening stuff and clips as clips always seem to break when you take door cards off.

Thanks for the help man. Definitely going to give this a try.

My 2010 E89 closed with a clang - the 2016 E89 does it with a more solid sounding clunk!
Unless somebody piddled about with the 2010 car then BMW has changed the build I reckon.

My 2009 e89 had rattles & buzzes all over the place but my lci car is as tight as a drum, i think bmw introduced some production tweaks to improve the build quality on later cars :?

Glad to hear that - I had wondered !

I was tempted to line the inside of the doors with sticky backed sound insulation, but, having seen a dent repairer fix a dent in a matter of minutes via the window trim on my car, i don't think it could have been done if the inside was covered in insulation.

Should of bought an old Mx5. Feels like closing a corn flakes packet after breakfast.

I love it. :D

Interesting. So the Z4 that I am comparing my car to is a 2011. but it's not a face lift, same old headlights without the chrome thingamajig thing on the side where the indicator used to be.

Anyways I ordered a full set of replacement clips for both door cards and I also found that by adjusting the U bend steel thing that the door latches onto when you close the door, this helped monumentally, the difference is literally night and day, my doors now open and close with one click, no more rattles and looseness feeling, it is also much softer to open and close the door, it feels new!

However, if the window is up then this isn't the case! Its allot better than what it was but when the window is up I still get that rattle so I am guessing this: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=LM72-EUR-04-2009-E89-BMW-Z4_35i&diagId=51_7187 thing may need some tightening. I also noticed that the bottom of my door card was un-clipped so I am guessing the door cards have been taken off at some point.
