Door membrane

Went about fixing my door rattle and adding sound deadening at the weekend.

Found 2 problems, caused by whatever neanderthal last have the door card off.
when I got the door card off, I thought this sound deadening looks easy, I can see right into the door, Then realised, There should be a membrane here, Some lazy *insert swear word at home) has just ripped the membrane right off, Theres remnants of the membrane and the buytl tape that head it there, But they have just taken a knife and could an inch from the outside all the way around. Which explains why my windows like to after heavy rain.

Coincidental the rattle in the door was The vertical bar which the regulator mounts too, The stud from the bar was through the hole but with no nut on it. so it was pushing in and out, They also didnt put the screw back in behind the door handle.

Anyone any ideas what can go in place of the membrane, cant seem to find any, dont really want to pay bmw prices for a bit of foam. Thinking some thick poly sheet or some alternative

and be extra careful to ensure that there is a completely perfect seal around the edge - especially at the bottom as its a common spot where water can leak in through the exterior of the door, run down the metal window guide/bar, and drip between the door and the door panel, and leave you with wet carpet in the door-sill area......

I find it interesting that a little membrane is the cause of so much water ingress... if they are damaged!

Mine does exactly this!! Passenger side footwell has been like a pool at times.

Someone butchered both of my membranes, still present but a knife slash horizontally along the middle of each presumably when fitting new window regulators. Soggy foot wells on both sides.

New membranes and butyl tape a couple of months ago now, pleased to report car is dry and leak free

Same as above both mine had been canibalised now replaced and dry as a bone beware damage can be caused to electrical modules if not sorted :headbang:

hi all, I have the same problem as the membrane is ripped and loose at the bottom - i suspect it may be the cause to the water ingress. Does anyone have the part numbers or the product name so I can source a replacement? I am considering using duck tape as a very short term fix - has anyone used this as a short term fix?

Yeah I did this until I could replace the membrane with a new one. Worked ok but the tape was completely useless by the time I properly fixed the problem 6 months later. Did help keep out most of the water out the cabin tho.

90% sure the membranes are single use very difficult to get off and reapply without ripping it. They aren't that expensive worth getting new ones.

I have literally just had my drivers door card membrane replaced
Exact problem as I found out in the May wet UK weather & the carpet was properly water logged!

Once the door card was off a previous owner had clearly butchered the mebrane in many places and just left in-situ.
Replaced with an OEM by my Indy all in for approx £85 so not too bad.
Now no water ingress (tested with high power hose)!

That sounds very reasonable - given my parts were £82 and needed a trip to the dealer to collect, plus a roll of butyl on top - I would have happily paid £170 all in to NOT have had to do the job!

My Passenger door is leaking slightly. So I'm going to purchase a new door membrane. Which one do I order? Left or right. I'm always confused by this. Is it right when looking at the car from the front or left when sitting in the driving seat ??? Where do I purchase the Butyl tape from, I'm guessing it's double sided. What width do I need ? sorry for all the questions but I don't want to purchase the wrong bits.

It's more like a putty actually - in hot weather like we're having now you want to keep it as chilled as possible so it doesn't become a sticky nightmare while you're working with it.

Lots of options, different colours etc - this is the one I bought: (would probably go 10mm bead if doing again rather than 8mm)

You need the left one. I think I paid £29 for mine from Rybrook Warwick
Thank you. Just been looking on LLLParts and they are about £36. Will try my local BMW dealer and ask for the Forum discount

Thank you. Just tried your link to the Butyl tape on Amazon but It's currently unavailable

Just a little tip. Do ensure the surface of the door where the butyl touches is free of grease or oily substance otherwise the effort of putting a new membrane might be wasted and could leak water again. It happened to me and I was livid when I realised. I ended up degreasing using fairy washing up liquid and washing off. When dry, the seal was very good.
