Door membrane replacement.

Was hoping to tackle the leaky door membrane issue today, as well as add some well-needed sound insultation but it seems I'm stumbling at the first hurdle of not being able to get to the torx screw behind the passenger sidr door pull.

Ive been cackhandedly jabbing and prying at it with all manner of spudgers and picks but the bugger won't shift!

I'm at the point where I'm suspecting that somebody's glued it in place or its actually a fake/blank.

Any ideas zed brethren?

If you can't get it out using a tiny flat head screwdriver, I would say it's most likely been glued in by a previous owner :cry: they do come out quite easily once you get something down the edge of it.

Managed to get it out with flat head screwdriver and a jab from a rubber mallet.
Nearly took my eye oit when it popped out!

So, lo and behold.. Here's the reason my door has been leaking in so much rainwater: there's no fekin membrane there to prevent it!!

I noticed in the history that the windiw regulator had been replaced at an indy.
Lazy fekkers obviously ripped out the membrane and never replaced it.
Shoddy. Very shoddy. :x

ok, next challenge; looking for replacement door membrane part number. Easier said than done.
Searched here. Popped into realoem and thought I would have found it sharpish on this page, but no cigar.
Any clues?

You need some butyl tape to fit the membrane to the door :thumbsup: I bought some from ebay, pretty cheap.

That membrane :o cowboys!

I done my passengers side years ago. Need to do my drivers side, but will be getting the door lock fixed beforehand.

got that already.nice big roll of the dticky stuff from ebay. have been meaning to do thisd for ages now. just didnt realise that my damn membrane would be obliterated! grr
 
Ok.
Next hurdle. Anyone know how the driver side door mirror controller connector disconnects?

Looking at that plug I would say the piece that looks like a letter L lifts over the nib at the top of the plug.This is just a guess as I can't remember from when I had my door card off.
 
See my marked up image below. Press the small ribbed spring tab and then you'll be able to swing the latch to release and eject the connector from its housing. You sometimes need to swing the latch the full 90 degrees to make it click past a small detent that pops the connector out a little. Then you can withdraw it.

Driver side membrane has obviously been out at some point too, as it was shredded in places and the butyl strip wasn’t refreshed.
As a consequence it was barely hanging on to the door, which is prob why my driver side footwell was also soggy on occasion, although not the veritable swimming pool that the passenger side has been!

Blinkin Nora, these little maintenance jobs turn into marathons!
Taken me ages just to get doorcards off carefully, as well as the 'intact' driverside membrane and what remained of the passenger side membrane.

Got some insulating material into the drivers door, 4 nice big pieces and had foresighr to use the cut pieces as mirror templates for the passenger side. But that's for tomorrow.

New membrane should be here by Thursday if Ekris BMW Utrecht can keep their promise....

That’s encouraging! :)

Btw, i can highly recommend this stuff to clean away the sticky resodue from old butyl tape. Cuts through it like a knife through butter...

Kiiiiin ell! I'm glad that's over and done with!

New passenger side door membrane installed and both doors sound-insulated.

What a chew. Took me the best part of 2 days, partly due to the fact I didnt know there was nothing of the pasgr side membrane left after a sh¡te repair in its previous life, partly cos I'm a relatively dozy bugger and go at my own leisurely pace 😂

Surprised at local stealer coming up trumps with the replacement membrane in under 24hrs and at not much more expense than online motor factors :thumbsup:

Let's hope this cures the water ingress issue...

Here's a tip for anyone handling that nasty, evil, sticky butyl tape: use greaseproof paper when handling the pancake roll of tape, ie fold it into a paper fold so it doesnt infect and stick to everything. Got a nice tidy bead laid rolling it out as I went around the edge of the membrane that way ;)

Soundproofing the doors was one of the first things I did when I bought mine. I couldn't believe how tinny the doors were. My 1989 Metro sounded better! :rofl: I'm sure you'll appreciate that mod for many months to come :wink:

Yeah def. Sounds waaaaay better now. Nice confident 'clunk' instead of the sound of a biscuit tin dropping on the floor! :lol: Been meaning to do it for ages. Happy days.

about 5mm dia. However it wasn't exactly a round extrusion/bead, more a squared profile with flat edges. I left space around edges of the membrane to squish down assuming about 7-8mm when affixed to the door. Looked nice and tidy when finished.
I removed the remnants/residue of the previous butyl from the passenger side door with the 'Label Off' spray (as above) for a nice clean application surface.

Have you ordered a new membrane from BMW? I didn't want to chance a pattern/OEM part so went to a dealer, also as it wasn't that expensive either.
