Door Catch or Body Flex ?

Hello all.

I have been a long time reader of this forum, but this is my first post!

I own a 2003 3.0l Z4 which I purchased about 5 months ago. I love everything about the car :) 8)

Sorry for link, but photos can be viewed here:

I have noticed a worrying problem which has happened to me on 3 occasions. During some "spirited" :D driving the passenger door came open! Not open as in wide open, just came off the catch enough to turn interior light on and produce loud wind noise.

The problem seems to happen when driving hard round a left hand bend and hitting an uneven road surface (an example being rumble strips, mild pot hole etc)

I was wondering if any of you guys have had this happen to you ? I guess the issue could be a faulty door catch ? However it does seem to open and close perfectly ok. The circumstances of when it has happens led me to beleive that maybe I get a bit of flex in the chassis which causes the door to pop open ? I would be suprised if this were the case.

Any thoughts welcome. Thanks!!

Interesting.. :|

Dont want to highjack this thread but I own a 11/2003 and the passenger door lock failed about 2 weeks ago. The passenger door is shut closed but the central locking seems to work ( door pin goes up and down ).

I ordered a new lock from the stealer for EU 100. The problem now is how do i get the door to open to install the new lock :|

:o

No such worrying problems here! find the chassis pretty stiff for a drop top...

This maybe better in the 'Problems' section?

Long time reader, first time poster here too!

This exact thing happened to me too. I blamed the Mrs at the time, for not closing the door properly! I was on a motorway, overtaking something that was moving pretty quickly, on a sweeping right-hand bend. Scared me witless, because the door 'popped' on the apex of the bend! Roof and windows were both up at the time. There was no chance of the door actually opening, but it was not properly closed, and the sudden wind-noise was slightlyoff-putting;)

I haven't been ableto recreate it though, despite trying........!

I've not had this happen to me. Welcome to the forum! Sorry your first post had to be a problem

Not really an issue to me....I still blame the Mrs for it! So far had 12 months of absolutly hassle free motoring, and what a car the 3 litre is! To co-incide with the nice weather, I removed my two bits of foam from the sound generator....awesome!

Thanks for the welcome chaps. Just moved from Surrey to Sussex...Enjoying the new roads!

I had the same issue also. I found that to fix this, I had to move the striker on the body, 1/16" in to fix the problem. Took 5 min.

Thanks for all the replys guys :)

Next time I will put this in the probem section (that I found straight after posting it lol)

Just to add to the list of people that have had this problem, I have also had this on a couple of occasions - again always whilst driving quite hard.
