Dog walking

We are getting more anxious about walking our Cockapoo. Hearing more and more reports about scumbags trying to steal dogs. Read a post on Facetube this morning about a dark grey Audi half a mile from here stopping near a small girl and asking her to put her dog on the floor. She managed to get to some other adults dog walking and the car went on it's way. This is getting scary. We live in a village and this is the first report of attempted dog taking near to our home. What legal deterrents would anyone recommend please. We currently carry small aerosol hairsprays in our pockets but not sure how effective that would be. My wife won't walk the dog on her own now, she's too scared of something happening

Its everywhere and the police dont seem to be doing enough about it.
Sooner or later someone is going to get seriously injured by somebody stealing their dog.

I'm assuming that pepper spray is not allowed where you live. Might be asking for a law suite should you use that anyway.

How about one of those small air horns that attach to a small can of compressed air. It would be loud enough to alert anyone nearby and may just scare the potential thief away because it is drawing attention. Probably would scare the dog too but far better than losing your dog to some lowlife!

Carrying Pepper spray is Illegal and carries the same punishment as if carrying a knife or a weapon. Going equipped I think they call it. Bloody ridiculous that you can't defend yourself if being threatened. This country is F...ed. I shouldn't feel like I live in the Bronx every time I walk my dog. :x

We too have a boxer and if someone was to snatch it they would bring it straight back as he's mad as a box of frogs.

Seriously tho we are hearing about this more and more. No cases I've heard of where I live but not to far away in Widnes I've heard of a lot of cases. Prices of dogs has gone through the roof, possibly to do with the pandemic and people at home more bored silly. Absolute scumbags, don't think I'd hold back if someone tried to grab ours.

Dog snatching does seem to be on the increase, there was a chap on my local radio only yesterday whos two cocker spaniels had been snatched from his garden and was calling for the law to be changed. At present animals especially pets are treated no different than say a laptop being nicked.

Pepper sprays are illegal to own and use but self defence dye sprays aren't. I carry one of these, have done for years,

Just choose wisely where you walk them , i rarely see anybody where i go & certainly don't get vehicles anywhere close , it pains me seeing folks walking their dogs on leads might as well walk them up & down the stairs .
I'm fortunate to live on the fringe of open country but otherwise id just drive out & walk them , criminals are lazy ph0uckers , they look for easy targets so think about where you exercise the 4 legged friends .

I agree about the off lead time. They need to run and have some space. I'm quite lucky where I live to have open farmland and fields within a couple of minutes walk but I regular drive out to Formby and Hightown to let him run through the sand dunes.

“Self defense “ sadly I don’t think that would apply were someone trying to steal your dog. I have a permit to carry a concealed handgun and do so most of the time I am out. However I also have insurance to cover lawyer’s fees, bail etc should I ever need to use my firearm in self defense. Carrying a deadly weapon is a serious responsibility and one that I don’t take lightly. I pray to God I never have to draw my weapon but I am thankful that I live in a country that allows me to do so...Well at least for the time being. The pols are working hard to abolish that right.

To use a weapon in self defense you must be in fear for your life or great bodily injury. Or be protecting another from a similar situation. You can often be in the right and still end up behind bars. Like I said, a great responsibility and not to be taken lightly.

It’s a sad state of affairs that the criminal seems to have more rights than the law abiding citizen anymore...We live in an upside down world.

Read a story this week that it has been happening on the Royal Estate at Sandringham. Lots of folks walk their dogs there. We quite often used to stay in our caravan. It seems that these villains are targeting places like this. I have also heard that they are visiting private houses ostensibly offering things like gardening services but in reality checking to see who has dogs. On the way out they mark the gate posts for their mates to come along at a later date to steal the dogs. Although we live in a small village we won’t leave our two in the front garden which is next to the road, unless we are there too. Sadly it’s not a very nice world we live in.

This has been happening a lot in my area (South yorkshire) and it absolutely sickens me.

My boy is getting on a bit and has arthritis so does hydrotherapy every week and only gets off the lead once a week to have a little blast around the racecourse that we live on (our back gate opens onto the course).

After a spate of thefts I now get anxious every time I let him off. Yes he's old and obviously not as desirable as a youngster, but these idiots apparently don't seem to care!

My heart goes out to the folks this has happened to. It would absolutely devistate me.

We live in a relatively crime free and safe village but there has been 2 attempted thefts this month and a handful last month too..definitely gypos, seems to be the same bunch with pictures circulating on social media, police seem powerless as they are still at it, we won't let our 13 year old lad walk the dog anymore as he would be devastated if anything happened to his best mate, Im also wary of letting the wife take her out on her own as it seems to be women they have targeted around here.. they'd have to be prepared for things to get ugly if they wanted her from me :x this should be made a serious crimewith heavy penalties imho

Not sure penalties work for them. The travellers are lawless as we have seen with the PC Harper case again, and if they get fined, they just steal a bit more.

That Suffolk site was not the first one to be raided recently and they just should raid all the sites regularly to stop the dog thefts.

I was thinking more 10 years in prison type penalties, that would possibly make them think twice, they're lawless yes but not stupid and generally tend to stick to low level crime that doesn't carry harsh penalties, obviously there are always exceptions
