Does your M start without pushing in the clutch?

Is it an American setup? I can start however, with cruise control.

I think you're right, and WLH's post backs it up. Very common in cars made for the North American market.

I only do it because years ago someone told me it'll extend the life of the starter motor. No idea whether this is true, but less cold cranking can only be a good thing.

Yep for sure a standard Z4MR will start without pressing the glutch in. I would never recommend you do that though. I always push the clutch in on any car. It's just more forgiving on the starter & transmission. Similar to not turning the steering wheel until the car is moving. Just be nice to your Zed. :)

Speaking of starting a car, check this out:

Yes mine does,I didnt know there was a clutch switch. Perhaps they have been installed for certain countries legislation that the clutch must de pressed to start the engine, all my motorbikes since 1987 have had this feature.Wouldnt surprise me if it was brought in as a new rule along with handbrake engaged also.

Ps
You should always start with foot on clutch:)
As it takes the gearbox /Diff weight off the flywheel when the starter is engaged and flywheel spun

Less weight less power less wear less stress
Easier start up:)

Rightio guys, thx for the, inputs. 2 days ago, I replaced the ignition switch and all my starting dramas have come to a screaming end

Starts every single turn now. Gotta love such an easy DIY, less than 15 mins and about :!: 20 bucks for ignition switch. Thx for taking the clutch switch out of the variables.

Love it

Good to here you got it sorted, nice and simple fix too.

Do make a habit of pushing the clutch in when you start her up though, your Zed will thank you for it.

The USA models require pushing the clutch in or the starter does nothing. I looked for it in the coding but did not see a line calling out the clutch switch for starting. I don't know what module would contain it if it's can be changed via coding. Maybe it's the way the switch is wired?

It looks like the EWS module needs coding to disable the need to push the clutch in to start the car.

Change:
PARK/NEUTRAL_EINGANG - ENGINE START ONLY IN PARK OR NEUTRAL GEAR
from "aktiv" to "nicht_aktiv"

But puts additional load on the thrust bearings...

The only load you add to the engine if you start without the clutch pressed is the drag of the gearbox first motion shaft against its bearings and the gear oil. If you depress the clurch you add the increased drag of the crank against the thrust bearings and the clutch release bearing. In reality, it makes no measurable difference.

However, i always think its good practice to start the car with the clutch depressed in case the car has been left in gear!

You fussy buggers haha

In my Maserati handbook it states to do so;)

If you start your car in gear and crash it your own fault I hate car makers nannying me. Press the clutch to start, rev limiters they are my valves and if I want to send them through the bonnet I will. I may be showing my age but why are we making it idiot proof to drive I don't want idiots driving.

Lol, ok thread closed. It was just to see if I needed to replace my ignition switch, which I did, now starts perfect everytime, with OR without the clutch pushed in.
Cheers.

Ignition switch as I suggested then. Seems to becoming more of an issue, although cheap and easy to fix luckily.

Your Maserati has a clutch?

How quaint :)

Actually, I wish mine did, I hate the cambiocorsa.

And our M will start without the clutch pressed, but it does lurch forwards as the wife parks it in gear.
