Does trunk pop open with struts?

I had three of these cars and can’t remember if the trunk pops open when you press key or button to open trunk under strut power.
I replaced both struts with oem and it just pops open half inch. I don’t recall if it ever raised on its own.

That's the standard, just unlocks basically, then you lift it yourself.

That's all most BMWs of this era seem to do sadly.

But I had a couple of BMW E46 3 Series Compacts in the past and the struts would open the tailgate fully, which was really handy when you had your hands full.

Multi-tasking is the answer - it is possible to hold a carrier bag and a car key in the same hand and still press the button!

Perfect! I think I remember that. Just want to make sure it’s normal. Fixed the convertible roof. Moved pump into trunk behind carpet nook. Works like a charm!
