Does this look right to you?

You may - or may not - remember that last month my Coupe was rear-ended by a Romanian lorry damaging the rear tailgate and bumper.

I went to the repairer yesterday to collect my repaired car. It had a new tailgate, bumper and some minor bits 'n pieces. The tailgate glass however was undamaged in the accident so that was re-used.

I rejected the repair as the gap in between the tailgate and the roof appears excessive. It is possible to look into the gap and see the tailgate hinges and electrical trunking. I'm positive that the gap wasn't that large beforehand.

The repairer after trying to convince me that the gap was "within BMW's tolerances" and much huffing and puffing has agreed to get the glass installer out again to re-install the tailgate glass to close up the gap.

I don't know what the tolerances should be, I just know that it doesn't look right how it is. I've tried Googling to find the size of the gap but to no avail.

So my question is - can anyone tell me what the gap should be? Does it look right in the photos to you or am I making a fuss about nothing?
 
Visually it looks incorrect

The gap should follow on from the panel line.

What does the window fit look like at the bottom of the screen where it meets the tailgate?
 
Doesn't look right, but surely there's a way they can adjust it ?
 
god i love this forum some times.... print that off and take it to your garage and then let him argue its in the tolerances :rofl:

Nice one Jingle.
Incidentally +- 1.5mm tolerance on those gaps sounds quite high when you think that's potentially a 3mm variance. Critical that this be considered as +- 1.5mm, consistent with adjoining gaps and parallel....
 
Well I'm delighted to say that I now have my Coupe back.

The tailgate glass has been taken off and repositioned so there is now a nice tight gap whereas before there was a Grand Canyon.

Thanks to one and all for your advice.

BTW - I drove back home with a grin like a Cheshire Cat; it's so nice to have my Coupe back :D
 
Good stuff. I can't believe they thought that shoddy job would be OK! You can clearly see the glass doesn't line up with the line on the side panels. Shocking quality control. Ay least it's sorted now.
