I am considering replacing my interior mirror for a second hand salvaged one, if i were to do so, will it need recoding to the car?

Doesn't look like;

Ahhhhh now I understand the question, the central locking system! I managed to retain it whilst fitting a different mirror.

This one has me stumped too! :?

Although I do have software in my mirror https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dual-lens-...=1512760201&sr=8-4&keywords=junsun+gps+mirror :D

The receiver and antenna for the central locking is in the mirror and it communicates with the GM5 module. I am unsure whether it simply receives and amplifies an analogue signal to the GM5 module or if it also does some processing and sends digital data to the GM5 module. according to TIS it has a signal data line to the GM module:

Hence I am unsure if it needs coding. Most of the posts/youtube don't mention it, but a lot appear to have just swapped the mirror glass after buying an E46 interior mirror and then finding it has no antenna for central locking.

Personally I wouldn't be buying a 2nd hand one, it's highly likely that will leak soon as well (assuming you're talking about the auto dimming one).
Many people use this guy, far better than buying a new one at bmw which is horribly expensive I think.

My problem isn't to do with the electrochromic mirror dimming, it is to do with the RF range of the key fobs. the key fobs will only work if I position them 15cm from the mirror directly in front of the screen or 45cm from the mirror if sitting inside the car. The remote key fobs will not even work when standing at the side of the car by the doors I literally have to hold my hand in the centre of the windscreen and virtually touching it, before they will work. This applies to both my keys, both well charged (12-16 hours in aux position) one with a brand new panasonic lithium-ion battery.

I haven't fully concluded that the antenna in the mirror is at fault, I have a few more things to experiment with, but it is certainly a possibility.

[ref]Magicarcher[/ref], just wondering if you replaced the mirror and if it fixed the issue you were having? Mine is exactly the same so am tempted to try a replacement mirror. Thanks.

UPDATE: Have just seen your other thread on this and see that a replacement mirror did resolve the issue so will go down that route!
