Does anyone wave?

I've owned several cars where owners waved at each other. I think that it's nice to acknowledge people - I always say a cheery 'hello' when walking my dog to other dog owners / walkers etc. for example - and I think the 'wheel wave' is similar. The wavey cars were (in no particular order):

Subaru Impreza WRX
MGF 1.8VVC
Rover Coupe 1.8VVC
Toyota MR2 2.0GT and late a Turbo

My non-wavey cars were:
BMW 118d Sport
BMW 318i SE
BMW X3 2.0d

So it appears from the above that owning a sporty car (or a sports variant) gets you waves. Then how is it I don't get any waves from fellow Z4 drivers? In fact, they don't even make eye contact. Or is it that I have a 3.0si and the only others round where I live appear to be roadsters of lesser capacity. If I drove a smaller engined Zed would people give me the time of day?

My theory is that other Z4 drivers know that the Coupe only came with the larger capacity engine, hence most roadster drivers have a slight inferiority complex that keeps their hands glued to the wheel. :poke:

In fact I've only seen one other Z4C and no Z4MC's at all on the Fylde (Blackpool) coast. :o They seem to be rare as rocking horse poo! Or I just don't get out much...

:tumbleweed: seriously. You're not driving a ferrari mate!

The apparent variance in wave/flash etiquette depending on what you're driving is totally baffling!

I bought a Chrysler PT Cruiser when they first came out, back in about 2000. They were pretty rare at first, mainly due to the fact that they were only made in Mexico to begin with and the lead time between ordering and delivery was around 5-6 months! Whenever I encountered another PT Cruiser, which was initially quite a rare event, they flashed and waved like lunatics. I soon took up the habit out of politeness. At first this all seemed fine. It was a rare event. However, a few years later, when there were PT Cruisers all over the place, it was a complete pain in the wotsit! Every little trip to the shops involved anything from two to ten flash/wave rituals. Nightmare!

Since owning the Zed, I've noticed plenty of admiring looks (especially with the roof down) but not a single flash or wave. What a relief!

Jees, if I'd have meant M Roadster drivers I'd have said M Roadster drivers. :P Anyway, just a bit of on-topic banter, no harm meant
I'm yet to get used to the subtleties of the forum obviously.

I was just playing with you ;-)

Hello

I have only had my Z4 for a fortnight, and I have waved three times and have been completely ignored! The first time I waved I did feel a bit silly so when I was ignored it didn't really matter. The second time I was in Macclesfield and waved at a bloke in a E85 3.0i, and again completely blanked. I made the effort to do a reasonably enthusiastic palm wave too, and we were both topless. Feeling a bit rejected, my next wave attempt was in Plymouth with another black E89 (a 23i) where I was simply stared at.

Should I give up?

Definitely don't give up. I've been waving for years and only get the odd acknowledge but it cheers my day up when reciprocated. Keep trying there are a few like minded wavers out there...honest!

Not had any waves in the UK but quite a few on a euro trip when in Germany and Switzerland on scenic roads.

I tend to drive scratching the inside of my nose so generally not well placed for such exchanges anyway. :o
