Does Anyone Know What This Is?

So I have been removing the dash panels (the long one for the passenger air vent and heater controls and the smaller one by the light switch in order to skin the aluminium trim in carbon fiber when I found this strange round piece and a little black rectangular box:

The round piece has a label on it which says point to the sky, some kind of antenna? the black box just says for 12V test passed and some random numbers. I did notice some strange wiring to the fusebox when I was fitting the dash cam leading up to under the dash. Is this a tracker? does anyone know what it is? It's obviously been put there by one of the previous owners.

Thanks guys, that was what I was thinking. There doesn't seem to be any manufacturers name on the two pieces but I wonder if it possible to get it activated?

Stick your phone in by the box, take a pic and google the numbers, that should lead to tracker supplier

I did try to take pictures as in my original post but will give it another go doing it the way you mentioned! Also I tried to lift the rectangular box to see if there were was something written on the other side but it seems to be wedge in at the back and I didn't want to risk pulling the wires or anything.

Carefully remove it and tie it to the neighbors cat. Hopefully that will throw the buggers off long enough for you to get away :?

It’s probably stuck down with double sided adhesive tape, try lifting it with a wide flat bladed scraper.
If you can’t reactive it ITRACK do a very cost effective tracker, you could simply change it as all the wiring is there for you

Wait a minute a tracker is supposed to help recover your car incase someone steals it, I am not trying to steal my own car!  besides where would you attach the power cable to?

Might be an insurance tracker as opposed to an anti theft tracker!

Mmm..... that is a possibility.

DAB receiver?

It can't be a DAB receiver since the car has DAB fitted from the factory and this thing is aftermarket. Ironically this is the first car I have with DAB radio. It work fine in the UK but there are virtually no DAB stations here in Spain! I was looking forward to using DAB but now I can't, I did wonder how come BMWs in Spain never have DAB as standard fitment like they do in the UK. I guess now I know!

Many car rental companies install trackers on their cars. If the car was previously a lease car, that would explain it.

I doubt that, tracking a vehicle you don't own is often prosecuted as a crime. Tracking people is basically stalking if its done without permission. We see angry divorced partners fixing iphones under cars to track them and ending up in court.

No, it perfectly legal because the company owns the car. The user is leasing/renting. It's possible they forgot to remove it before selling upon lease expiration.

Assuming the car was previously leased.

FWIW.. I had a battery issue with my car... main dealer had it in a couple of times for a coupe of days.... They found a 'Tracker' and said it was causing parasitic drain, as apparently it wasnt connected to BMW spec.. I asked for a written guarantee that the tracker was not activated..they couldnt do this.. so i made them remove mine and replace the wiring loom, as you never know who might be working at the 'tracker' company....They then replaced the battery with a larger capacity one...and no issues since....

Well I managed to get a good look at the black box:

Typing those number into google comes up with listings on ebay saying that it is a BMW 12V DC Battery control unit.

Still baffled by what it is, the ebay listing doesn't say anymore than BMW 12V DC Battery Control unit:

Is it maybe something like this but BMW made?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Battery-Guard-6899-Black-40-25/dp/B00ZETXNAQ

It’s a Smart-Nav UK MC55 Sat Nav Navigation Tracker Connection Kit

The box, puck and one other box form the kit..
