Hi, just over the centre storage compartment, there is a little button / panel thing which is highlighted in the photo below. It is very similar to and just over the button that is used to open the centre storage compartment. The button / panel seems to be pressed in a little on mine and needs to be clipped back out into place. Does anyone know what purpose this little button / panel serves,

Sh*t sorry, i can't seem to upload a pic. Yes, i have a roadster. What do you mean, when you say "This may be the bit that's let's you access the soft top" - how does it work, thanks again
 
The button is used to unlock/open the soft top when you have the roof down. It is used along with a cord found in the boot and it only required if you have electric problems and the roof doesn't close automatically.

It's in the driver's manual if you need more info.

On the '06 facelift models, this button is disabled as the roof no longer locks into place when open. There is no pull-cord in the boot (trunk... :roll: ) either for the facelift model, despite some owners manuals showing there is.
