Does anyone else have this problem?

Hi All

Just thought i'd ask this question because its been bothering me a while now.

My car runs Absolutely fine......Except when its cold.

The car starts fine and idles quite quickly for a time but then when i drive up the road its very very lumpy. There are breaks in the power which are so significant that i thought it was my poor clutch control but it happens when im no where near the clutch. This morning i was in traffic (crawling in 2nd gear 20mph) put my foot down gently to accelerate and thought it had momentarily died on me. A second later its thumped me in the back and picked up quickly. The car has had issues with the Air Mass Metre and recently had it replaced under warranty.

Its a completely different story once warmed up (its a difficult car to drive smoothly anyway) and feels much smoother in the power delivery.

Does anyone else have this issue when cold or is this just a characteristic i need to live with?

Well, it's posted in the ///M section, so I'd assume it was either a ///M-Roadster or a ///M-Coupé, and checking his profile confirms it as a //M-Coupé. However, as both use the same engine & associated electronics I'd assume it doesn't matter :P
 
I also have that issue for 2 or 3 minutes until (I Guess) the engine warms a little but it is not as bad as you described.
 
It's not the CDV, sounds more serious than that i think. To me it's a fuel starvation issue that you describe which could be fuel or oxygen/air related. I'd just take it to BMW and through it at them. I assme you're still inside warranty, most are.
 
Yes still under warranty. But considering its still like this after having the Oxgen sensor replaced - it just seems strange.
 
mine does the very same thing even when its warmed up but not as bad.when i just blip the trottle or just pull away at low rpm
the engine seems to cut out for a split second.
iv'e got my car booked in on saturday about another matter so i will bring this problem up at the same time.

If it's an E36 M or Z4M you have a fuelling problem. It's very unlikely to be ignition related if it runs fine at all other speeds. Run the car until the tank is nearly empty then re-fill with a "Quality" fuel (ie NOT ASDA/Tesco). Then give it 5 miles to burn the existing fuel in your fuel line. You may have last filled up with water contaminated fuel (very common nowadays). A tank of good fuel will sort it quickly...

Is Tesco99 not a quality fuel? It is in my book.
 
No, Tesco99 causes no issues whatsoever, hence my post. Z4MPuss's comments on Tesco fuel are ill informed in respect of Tesco99 IMO.
I prefer it over Vpower.
 
I get this on and off in the 30k ive done in mine, rarely but usually cold. definitely not clutch related, ive had my maf sensors replaced in both banks too.

starvation is a possibility, i always thought it a vanos quirk or maybe an early ecu. when was ur /M registered, is it one of the first?

i recently reset my throttle sensor as i had the cruise retrofitted and it seems a lot smoother, hasnt done this again since but not to say it's related.
 
how do you reset the trottle sensor?that maybe worth a try.my car was built in nov 06 and registered in june 07.
 
I have a slight weak spot when i accelerate a lil hard when the engine is cold- I too thought this was the vanos. Sounds a bit more severe in your case - perhaps someone from BMW should take a look.
 
I get some hesitancy when the engine is still cold. It's fine when the engine is up to temperature though. It's not something that has concerned me, and since my car is not standard (Gruppe intake, exhaust etc) then I don't imagine I'll get far mentioning it to the dealer (though may try when it goes in before the warranty expires).

I just presumed it was a characteristic of the engine, being fairly highly strung. Since it disappears after a few minutes and once the car is warmed up.
 
i havent noticed this prob but my car tends to come out on the warmer days so maybe that masks the issue!! but in all honestly i cant say ive noticed!
 
Its interesting that several others have this issue. My first option will be to reset the ECU. If it continues i think i will take it in to BMW. I just know what will happen though. I'll take it in and have it returned with a call saying 'couldnt detect any faults'!

Someone else described it perfectly earlier - its like a flatspot when accelerating from low revs.

how do you go about resetting the ecu???the post seems to have been deleted!!!!!
