evening all,

just wondered does anybody elses exhaust pop and burble when revved at a standstill ? i think this might be linked to my misfire?
i recently carried out the vanos fix and all was well for 300 miles and the burble and popping dissapeared with the misfire between 1500 and 3000rpm, now after 300 miles and filling up with a new tank, the popping and burble is back as is the misfire, i couldnt believe it as i thought id fixed the problem with the vanos but it would appear not!

My Remus does. But my standard never did..

In days of old when knights were bold and fuel injection (COP, digital ignition VANOS and lots of other stuff) weren't invented, performance engines had big carbs long overlap cams and sloppy timing (both ignition and cam) this lead to a lot of un-burnt fuel getting into the exhaust where it hit hot metal and went pop, bang and burble.

This can still be seen on Turbo cars running high boost or your average Zonda R at the Ring.

Today manufactures like BMW with the Z4 and Nissan with the Z370 like to engineer in this sound as this is what they think we want to hear, and in truth it dose sound great.

2.5 engine ,standard exhaust , no popping but a very pleasing deep burbling when lifting of the throttle :D :D

Oh yes :D

Even with the standard setup I was constantly driving in lower gears around town and letting off the throttle suddenly.

Me too :D
Have to knock it over into M/S first, but then the fun begins

Get it if coming up spirited to roundabout or junction etc in low gear then lift off sharply :D

Just revive this theme...

I too love the sound of the popping and burbling on the overrun although it does feel a bit naff that it is carefully engineered to mimic something that was never supposed to happen or add any value (in terms of speed or fuel economy).

Anyway - questions:

1. I get the impression it only happens at low speed 1st or 2nd gear - can anyone confirm?
2. Would it be possible to alter the settings in the engine mapping (e.g make it happen more or less or at higher speeds etc.)?

Mine always burbles when lifting off. It only ever "pops" when absolutely hammering it out of the blocks (on the 1st -> 2nd change), which I don't do very often.

Very subdued overall though - it's no F-Type V8 S.

Mine snaps crackles and pops!! It's awesome in every way and pretty much ruins anyones day who comes within 10feet of it.

Mine burbles a bit when you give it a poke and then lift off quickly, but it doesn't happen all the time and is not quite loud enough. Never get any pops :( Have to say, it's the only thing I miss about my old Focus ST - that car had a luverly sound track :driving:

I get the odd burble now and again... nothing as good as the bangs out of my old decatted S4, or the miltek loud shod XKR, or indeed the tiny Abarth - that thing was pop, bang crazy!

I would like it to be a touch louder mind you...all very childish.....

:D

Mine popped and burbled, especially at low speeds. Turns out it was the front section of the exhaust, some nuts had corroded and the hole got bigger and bigger until it sounded like a stock car.

Yeah, sometimes tempting to drill a hole or two deliberately

LOL, I must be the only one who doesn't like noisy exhausts :?

I don't mind a bit of noise when I give it the beans, but going around town with it sounding like something from the fast and the furious is a bit embarassing, especially as 99% of noisy exhausts are on 10 year old Vauxhall Corsas.

Yeah, there is a balance to be struck. In all honesty I think Ford got it exactly right with the ST - nowhere close to chav volumes, but consistently and audibly chatty. Very nice indeed.

Mine burbles under 4K rpm, and then growls.

But that maybe down to my aftermarket exhaust with a couple of bypass pipes added for good measure!
