does a new headlamp with assembly require programming?

I had an indy shop replace my front left headlamp after it was damaged in an accident (1000.00usd part) and the thing won't turn on. The shop has called BMW and they say it needs to be programmed to work for the car. This seems odd to me since it was an OEM replacement ordered from BMW and is a bit inconvenient as the nearest dealership is 120 miles round trip. Does anyone know of a trick to make the light work or do I just need to take it to BMW?

I've changed many lights like for like on Zeds and never needed any coding.

Is it halogen or xenon? If xenon have they switched the ballast across to the new unit. Could the ballast have been damaged in the accident - try using the one off the other side to test?

Thanks, I'm not really sure what had to happen. It was damaged in an accident but they didn't charge me for the programming or whatever magic they did.

Mine just plugged straight in, well you wont have to program halogens. Is any light working on the unit? Have they plugged it in?
