Doctor in the house.

Hello not looking for diagnosis more so advice. Every now and then for no apparent reason I get an extremely painful ( well it is for a man ) right ankle and foot. Painful enough to stop sleep and make walking almost impossible. Went to see Doctor who suggested possible gout :o . went for x-ray and blood test which both came back clear. Still get pain what do I do now just grimace and bear it? Or is there anything else I could ask for ? Thanks Steve

I am not a doctor.

Have you changed foot ware recently? Taken up running or anything like that? If so I'd be tempted to look there first.

I used to get something similar is my less active days. A sharp pain when walking in the ankle that would also radiate up the leg, at its worst it would wake me up and felt like the whole lower leg was in spasm. My doctor referred me to a podiatrist who 3d scanned the underside of my feet and created insoles that twisted my foot into the correct position and supported the arch better. She also told me to stop wearing flat soled trainers. Over time this worked and I have much less issue now. I'd recommend asking your doctor to refer you to a podiatrist at the local hospital.

This doesn't sound quite the same thing but also had this before http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantar_fasciitis which is bloody painful but disappears when walking / stretching so doesn't sound like yours.

Thanks Sketchley . no change of footwear except for the usual alternating of stuff I have had for a while, but will take your point of flat soled shoes. Thanks for taking the time mate.

Any recent trauma you can remember? Soft tissue injury, tendinitis maybe? Can you describe the pain, where exactly, anything make better or worse, what type of pain, dull/sharp/burning/knawing etc? When you get the pain, is it also red, hot and swollen? How young are you and what is your weight? X-ray was completely clear? No evidence of any osteoarthritis? Any recent illness that may have triggered something called reactive arthritis?

No recent injury pain very similar to broken bone or badly turned over ligament damaged ankle. Age 50 around 90kg x-ray totally clear actually seems better bearing weight no redness but can swell very badly so shoe barely fits . Thanks Alun for taking the time. Steve. What was wondering is what if anything I may ask doctor for next as I dont have any desire to waste his time if just an age thing etc.,

I'm encouraged by this to go on a medical forum and ask for car advice :D

You will find this forum can help with most problems and certainly can offer advice. We are in the company of some very nice people.

Well said

I have suffered exactly what you describe, much less recently, but it was diagnosed as a form of gout. A two or three day course of MELOXICAM (which I think is a fairly common anti-imflammatory drug prescribed, very quickly sorts it. (Initially VIOXX was prescribed and was brilliant, but this is now banned)) Doctor had no idea what caused it, had blood tests and put it down to something eaten or drunk. Possibly the latter as the first time it ever happened was on holiday in France and we blamed it on too much of the Rose wine or seafood.
Best of luck to you.

I'm not a medical doctor so I can't offer professional advice.

My dad had gout and it sounds similar to your symptoms, ie severe pain and swelling. It's due to Uric acid and can be controlled with medication. Just be persistent with your GP.

Hi, what blood test were made? If one is suspected of gout, the level of uric acid in blood should be checked, no tonly basic blood morphology.
