Well, I can no longer put off getting into the garage and starting to do my upgrade / refurbishment programs..

When I bought all the bits over a year ago, it was after days of desk research, and it all seemed logical and coherent.

Now having laid out most of the bits in and around the uprated turbos (TTE500) I'm wondering if I've bit off more than I can chew...

For those not fluent in N54 plumbing we have..

VSRF uprated low pressure pipes from air box to turbos (big black plastic pipes)

TTE500 turbos (nice shiny things in the middle)

VTT aluminium high pressure feed pipes to the intercooler

VSRF aluminium charge pipe from intercooler to manifold (short dumpy thing)

Replacement aluminium vacuum resevoirs (two black bean cans)

Forge uprated diverter valves (two black aluminium ported valves)

Plus gaskets, clamps, O rings etc etc

It certainly is a daunting task, from what I’ve read access to the turbos is limited, just keep taking plenty of photos and videos as you work your way through, at the end of the day it’s “just bolt off bolt on”
Would it be worth taking the engine out and replacing all those dry old gaskets while you are on with it, there is a YouTube video that may be worth watching.

Hi Chippie, the engine out is a bridge too far for me I think..not really enough room to do that in my garage..

Even if you do the engine out, most of the ancillaries have to be taken off to take it out...

As you say I'll just have to stop hyper ventilating and just steadily work my way through it..

Fortunately delayed again for a week as the front bumper and rear spoiler are getting resprayed next week..

I think dropping the subframe would be the best idea. You'll need an alignment after but it gives you plenty of room to get at the turbos.

It's a huge headache on jack stands, but with your ramp it'll be easy enough.

Peter, you could simply sell those bits and use the money to buy a nice little E85. :D

Probably have enough left over to spray it yellow too.

Here’s a link to the video I referred too, removing the engine and subframe for easier access, it also covers a lot of the common failures on the N54

"The only way to make your N54 reliable"
"change it for a B58. It's cheaper"

Thanks for all the comments..helpful and otherwise

I’ll just try my best..the problem is that all the videos I’ve found are N54 not in an E89 chassis..

I’ve got the ability now to put the car on all 4 wheels about 70 cm in the air or place it on the jack points and let the wheels/suspension dangle.

I’ll see how it goes step by step..the good news is that there is no rush…but once I’ve started I’ve got to finish it as the I can’t take the disassembled mess to anyone else 🙈

Best of luck with it all, one day I'd happily have done all that sort of work but these days I'd rather be wiring something

Video requested, including colorful invectives...

I'd go further and say livestream!

The live stream would be very boring.. days of nothing and then 7 minutes of activity then days of nothing… :tumbleweed:
