Do You Have 2 of These?

Yesterday I was doing some small jobs on my car and noticed something in the boot. On the floor of the boot on the right hand side there is a plastic bump stop for the roof but on my left side it seems to be missing, see the photos below. I was thinking to order another to replace the missing one so I checked on realoem to find this piece. I found it here, it is item number 22:

What is confusing me is that under quantity in RealOem it shows only 1 normally if there are two in the car the quantity would show 2 in RealOem, so should the car have one on each side or is the left hand side intentionally left blank? I also found out that this tiny piece of plastic costs around 27€ from BMW! so before I go out and buy one at this extortionate price could someone please check in their boot and tell me if there should be one on each side or is it the same as my car where there is none on the left?

I'm guessing it may say quantity 1 if they are handed left and right and therefore different parts?

Been out again to have a closer look - they appear identical to me

I think they are identical, I pulled the one on the right out and it looked like it would go straight in on the left although I didn't try it! I'll try it to make sure before I go ahead and buy one. Also I did try looking in RealOem to see if another was listed somewhere but I couldn't find anything.

I can't help but think that this part must be helping with the roof somewhat! :?
 
Its always worth putting the part number in on eBay. I have paid 4x the eBay price from BMW thinking ‘that won’t be on there’ .... it was.
 
I had to buy one for mine when I got It earlier this year, it’s ridiculous how much BMW charge for a small piece of plastic, apparently it was the only one in the country at the time

Everytime I call all the specialist BMW breakers none seem to have any E89s in. But I guess I should try again!.

Yep already tried that just getting one result from Germany brand new 33€!!

When I looked at it I thought to myself around a tenner tops but when I checked online it's showing around 27€, that is just daylight robbery! I am pretty sure BMW never used to be this expensive for these kind of parts. Years ago when I was trading cars it was always the Japanese manufacturer who priced trim exorbitantly and BMW Mercs were pretty reasonable. Seems like they have gotten greedy!
 
I'm assuming it's a bump stop/support for a roof section once stored.
It doesn't seem particularly substantial.
For now (until a breaker part becomes available) could you make one up from a piece of rubber, cork block or wood.
Painted black it would suffice for now
From what I can see you should be able to secure with a tie-wrap.

Failing that is this a part that could be 3D printed?
Not being in place is there a risk of straining the roof section if not supported?

That is what I was thinking, if there would be undue strain on the roof but then again I have had the car now some 5 months now and it seems to be fine and god knows how long the previous owner had it like that.

I like your idea about making one up temporarily, especially getting one 3D printed since I assume that would be permanent and probably a lot cheaper then getting one from BMW except I have no experience with 3D printing. How would I go about do this?

Sorry I can't help with that, I'm just aware of the process and it's potential (retired Engineer :wink: )
I'm pretty sure there was a member on here that bought one
Knowing the Forum there will be an expert somewhere, hopefully along shortly
 
Have you had a good look in the storage area and under the carpet/trim next to it, it may have been dislodged and be hidden underneath
 
I had a quick look under the floor in the battery area and the little box with the lid on the left but didn't find it. This weekend I will try and remove some of the trim and see if it's there.
 
Find a Z4 in a dealer and take it for a test drive.

When "checking" the boot, you might find this part *accidentally* finds it way into your hand.
