Do you believe in fate?

I had a conversation with one of my neighbours earlier. He remarked on the fact that our house is for sale, so I told him it was because we have found a cottage in the next village that we really like. The minute I walked in the place, I knew it was what I have been looking for all my adult life. My current house does nothing for me whatsoever. Even the last house that I built didn't really feel like 'home'.
Anyway, he said he believes in fate and if it is meant to be it will happen. I have never thought about things like that, as it's too random. I have always been of a mind that if you really want something you have to make it happen, one way or another.
Thinking about it more, I wonder if there is something in this fate thing.

Just wondering whether others believe in fate, or is it just rubbish?

We are all heading towards the same fate.
I reckon it is up to us to shape as much of that journey as we can so we get there contented.

I am not so certain but SWMBO believes in fate, we sold one house and were renting till we sold the other, finally sold just as her dream house became available, first one we saw, looked at 2 others but she was set on this one, she said it was fate as it had been sold once but the buyer dropped out just as we were starting to look

I do - sometimes things just seem to fall into place.

In April 2021 I had an offer on a bungalow accepted and had an offer on my house. But there was a problem with Probate. It was empty as the lady had to move into a care home and her son and daughter were selling on here behalf with LPAs in place. But it seems the lady had never got probate when her husband died, and he wasn't the father of her kids.

Anyway it kept dragging on and early this year I got fed up waiting so I looked for an alternative and found the house where I am now. A better property in a much nicer area that was slightly cheaper! The only downside was it didn't have an over-sized garage.

But it just feels like it was meant to be. :)

There are thousands of things we do or experience that is out of our control, but we never regard them as anything other than normal life. I feel that one of those things happening that has a strong emotional effect on us is often referred to as Fate.

I totally agree, John, (or did). Coincidence probably, but if you are looking for it, could be considered as fate.
I've always been a down to earth, "you make your own luck" type of person, but can't help wondering if this is meant to be.

If I had the slightest clue what fate actually was, then I might believe in it. Work hard, live life to the full and roll with the punches and when sh1t happens and there is nothing you can do about it, accept and move on.

I suppose the first thing will be you have to buy it.
Then you can start thinking about fate.
Next will be how long you will stay in it before selling up and moving on.😅

my nan always used to tell me "Everything happens for a reason, it may not always look positive when it happens, but may look better a while longer"

I try my best to roll with the punches, but sometimes a gap between the punches would be nice :)

Hindsight is another wonderful thing that can take you down all sorts of weird paths

It was fate I came to the UK and met my wife as I was originally going to go to Switzerland for my post grad thesis.

Karma is certainly something I think about, like what will happen with the strikers when they need services.

Reminds me of a young lad I used to know. He was doing some general labouring work and said "this is bread and butter work for me. Just sometimes it would be nice to have some jam on it, though!" :D

1. Fate is the development of events outside a person's control, regarded as predetermined by a supernatural power.
2. In Greek & Roman Mythology, the three goddesses who presided over the birth and life of humans. Each person's destiny was thought of as a thread spun, measured, and cut by the three Fates : Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos.

So for me, 1. I don't believe in supernatural powers/God and 2. is 'mythology'
That only leaves coincidence, chance, circumstance, sh1t happens or whatever you may want to call it

i generally abide by the rule, if it wasnt meant to be, it wasnt meant to be. when i've been buying properties and missed out on properties, rather than dwelling on the past, i've moved on. though generally, if i've missed out on something, something better has come along in its place. or even once, something that i thought i'd lost, has subsequently become available again.

generally, i believe every cloud has a silver lining, and to try and make the best of a bad situation. there are also some things you just can't change - like my mum getting cancer, which obviously sucked, but has completely changed my life direction as a result.

i try and live life with few regrets, but alas, i've still got the odd one from my youth which i cant shake, unfortunately.

also, i dont really believe in fate. indeed i frequently tempt fate, but nothing bad has happened as a result so far.

oh last one, YOLO holds fairly true with me. keep hearing stories of people passing well before their time (my mum included) so if theres something you want to do, theres no time like the present as you might be hit by a bus tomorrow. you only live once!

I don’t often comment in the lounge as that’s where arguments start.

With fate, or predestination, we have no accountability for our actions, which kind of undermines our whole existence. So I believe fate is what we make it, not the other way around.

We all end up with the same fate, that is predetermined, how we get there is up to us. It's just some people find that journey easier than others.

There is a theory that time is like a dvd and we are in the middle somewhere. Everything in the past that has happened is still happening and everything in the future already has happened. Is this fate? :?

I would say it is not fate, Mikey. Nonsense, yes! :D :poke:

Karma and fate are interlinked so neither is exclusive.
Karma, or what goes around comes around - decides ones fate.
Agressively cutting someone up in your Z4 where you took direct action and are responsible is bad Karma so fate determines that you will get your comeuppance!
Giving way or being polite is also a direct action and is good Karma so fate determines you will be rewarded.
We are all responsible for our Karma and hence fate!

So I will have that G29 by treating my E85 and everyone else nicely until I have the opportunty!
