Do we really need a third car?

A new car just to ferry a dog about... You said your dog is small so why don't you teach it to sit/ lay in the passenger footwell.

Tried that, she's still a puppy and sitting still is not top of her list.

Regarding the running costs of a second car. It was the insurance, MOT and taxing of 2 cars that saw me pack that idea in. It was like having another 2 kids, one of them was always wanting for something.

I don't think running costs are that bad, I purchased my Fiesta Zetec new in March 2012 so no MOT required yet, and as for insurance it's only £147 protected/legal and road tax is only £105 also it does 40+mpg most of the time, cheap motoring?

How does your insurance work though GBG, NCB against one car but not the other so one car costs a bomb to insure?

The insurance NCD is "mirrored" some companies will do this, the insurance on my Porsche is only £455 on a value of £76k last March when I renewed the insurance :)

You clearly don't live in manchester (good on you) with just £455 for a 76k porsche. The sooner I move the happier Ill be lol..

Yes, but you're rich. :P

Neither of the cars I was running were new so it was £750 to insure them both, around £600 for servicing etc per year then 2x MOT on top of that and then £520 VED per year for both. Granted, it's not a kings ransom. To be honest, thinking back it wasn't even so much the cost. It was just the relentless feeling of tax one, next month the other needed an MOT then next month it was insurance time, then 1 needed a service the next month etc etc. It got boring.

I will point i do actually still run 2 cars (as well as pay for the wifes wheels). The 205 doesn't count though.

yep, I find the constant faff draining. I would rather spend more quality time snoozing in my parker knoll.

We run three cars. I have the little Mazda sport for work and the Z for the weekends and Mrs G runs a little Clio 1.2 to work and back. She only work 1/2 mile from the house.

Of the three cars:- the Mazda and the Zed both do 5 to 8k per year, Zed was doing the most miles last time I checked. The Clio does the least.

Why not just by an old car for peanuts?

how about a custom wicker basket with fleecy base that sits on the passenger seat?

there has to be a simpler design solution than a ford focus.

Hi Maniac

Cool dog! I read your posts and understand your dilemma!

I used to always run 2 cars (I'm OCD about my BMWs) but since getting married I have had to ration myself to the one and use my wifes Focus.

I'm not surprised by your Merc experience. I'm constantly searching around for my next pride and joy but always come back to BMW as nothing else feels right.

I just collected my Z4C last night and it's awesome!! Completely impractical (especially as I have 2 kids) and I already miss the ride of the E92 I part exed, but it puts a smile on my face (which great as the E92 is, it never really did). It's so engaging to drive.

The new Focus is excellent. Having spent a week with one in Cyprus I was very impressed. But do you need to spend £12k? I would hang on to the Zed, enjoy it, get yourself a cheap hack and pay toward the mortgage! Very boring, I know, but I am an accountant :headbang:

Our Focus is a 2000 plate with 103k. We've done 20k in 18 months of ownership and it has never let us down or cost a penny in maintenance. It's not sexy but I'll happily be using that for the days I need comfort and practicality.

Put dog in Z boot , problem solved , our terrier never ever goes near the leather in any of our car,s .
Dog,s get used to most things & as terrier,s like it down dark holes i don,t see a problem 8)

lol at the little face looking out. Unfortunately the e89 boot had an interior parcel shelf that can't be removed so if I put her in the boot, she'll be locked in a dark box, not ideal.

Have you thought of buying a car seat cover instead?

:D

I have 3 cars (1x workhorse, 1x classic and 1x weekend toy), SWMBO has 1.

I have a seat cover but I also have leather on the doors and alcantara, a high gloss wood centre console etc etc. When I take the dog out, I am constantly distracted telling the dog not to stand on the door or try to scrabble over the gloss wood centre console etc so even though the seat is protected to a degree the interior of my car is not dog friendly in the sense that it can take hammer, it can't.

Your car is beautiful.!!!! Sell the dog
