Do water Pump while doing oil pan gasket?

I have a minor oil pan leak and plan to have it repaired this winter. My car has 90,000 miles on the odometer. It's a 2011 e89 3.0, is there any labor/financial advantage to having the electric water pump and thermostat done at the same time?

Given the mileage I would be doing this anyway. The sump may require the sub frame dropped for access. This would be the perfect time to replace the water pump and thermostat.

It’s not a massive job but would be so much easier in one. Just my thoughts as I’ve done the pump and thermostat.

You can find all aluminium replacement pumps if you search around a bit. A permanent solution as opposed to the half alloy half plastic BMW offering

The problem is by design, if the plastic impeller fails, plastic should not damage the engine. If an alloy impeller fails it most certainly will.

Sounds like a good plan…FWIW…..normal failure mode is worn brushes on the pump…resulting in intermittent faults initially before finally irreversibly failing,

On a N52 90k is definitely getting close to probable failure times..oh..thermostat at the same time!🧐👌

It's probably worth getting a new pump if you want to avoid being stranded and waiting for recovery, as when my pumps died the engine overheated within a mile. First one was in an E86 at 60K miles, second was an E91 325i on 135K miles so it may have had one before!

At that mileage... create a list of "while you're down there" work. new pan cover/gasket, therm, coolant pump, coolant res, oil cooler, belt tensioner/pullies, belts, coolant pipes, radiator, turbos, inlets, pcv, intercooler, sway bar/grommit, control arms, endlinks/tie rods, struts, plugs, coils, injectors, .... im missing some... add all of the overthetop B21 custom mods. :fuelfire:

Yes Pierburg were the original supplier, just don't buy it from a BMW dealer as it will cost about twice as much.

If the ones that came out of my Z4M at 78K miles are anything to go by it's well worth getting them replaced!

I assume the Piersburg water pump is recommended.
If you are doing the work yourself it’s worth noting that if you buy from Autodoc, should the pump fail (as mine did with less than 1000 miles) they can be funny with any warranty claims.
