Do the doors unlock when you turn the car off?

Hi All,

Quick question please. I have a 2003 model.

When you switch off the ignition or take the key out of the ignition should the doors unlock ?

Mine don’t on a 2006 Z4M - the driver’s door only unlocks when I open the handle.

3.0si E86 mine don’t, you open the door handle twice to unlock then open the door, or press the central locking button next to the hazard switch then open the door. Mine lock automatically at a few mph. You get used to the double pull on the handle very quickly.

Do the early E85 doors lock when you move off, quite sure mine don't. So already unlocked when you stop as far as I know ?

No they don't, and it can't be coded via Carly either (which is a real annoyance).

You can enable this with an Intravee, in my 2004 E85 I have it to lock above 10mph and unlock when ignition switched off (along with the indicator flash to pass, lights on unlock etc).

Nah mine sure don't unlock. They do lock a short time after moving off though. I think it is an Safety feature. The structure is more resilient if the doors are locked as apposed to just closed.

They used to on my 3.0Si, but I got them coded so they didn't.

They do on my M, so I'll need to find a kind forum member sometime to put that right! :roll:

In both cases they didn't unlock when you turned the engine off or removed the key. If they did I might have put up with them. :lol:

Strangely on my E90 you can turn auto-locking on or off yourself on the OBC.

You can do it on Carly, the auto-locking, but the auto-unlocking when you stop isn't available.

I've used Carly extensively the last 3-4 days, on my 3 BMWs, and it's not quite the panacea that people think. My Delphi can BMW-specific things than the Carly can't, despite it being a generic application for all makes.

From what I’ve seen over a few z4s, they don’t unlock when the engine is turned of

Since driving my girlfriends mini and that unlocks when engine is turned off, I wanted the function on mine..... not programmable unless a 3rd party device is used

If you add the intravee box to an early car it has the indicator option but I think you can select the number of times it flashes, the same box also gives you a choice of which lights come on when unlock the car, and you can have different lights to come on when you lock the car

Surely the doors should be unlocked when driving. If you're in an accident it's easier for emergency services to get into a car that has doors unlocked.

If you crash a Z4 there's a higher chance of death anyway.

It all depends on the damage obviously.
