Do I take the high road or the low road?

It looks increasingly likely that I will get my car in time for bank holiday weekend,
And have decided a road trip to visit a friend in Scotland is the way forward.

Any advice on routes?

where in Scotland?... M74 is the most convenient for the west side but boring, A1 to east coast not my favorite, A68 a great road but lots of cameras.. there are lots of interesting routes but a location would help recommendations :)

Damn shame you couldn't have got it in time for next weekend, you could have also joined our forum meet on Skye. :driving:

I will be travelling from London.
Could take the high road (via peak district)
Or the low road (via lake district)

Am meeting a friend in Clackmannanshire. But maybe venture into highlands since I will have car.

Yes, I was looking at that, sounded good, especially whisky part.
Not sure I'd camp though, would try to find a Scottish castle to hole up in.

Whereabouts in Clackmannanshire? If you want to venture out for a drive once you're up, a good option would be heading north from Dollar to Crieff via Gleneagles (A823). From Crieff you can go east for a little trip to Dunkeld, or west towards Lochearnhead then further up north into the Highlands.

As for getting here, depends how direct you want to be! Despite being 2/3-lane motorway, the M74 is surprisingly scenic through the Borders. A nice alternative is to cut off at Moffat and follow any of the A/B-roads towards Edinburgh direction. Then jump over the Forth Road Bridge into Fife then west into Clackmannanshire...

And a Scottish Castle to stay in :poke:

Alloa in clackmannanshire.

I do need to avoid any pothole/gravel routes to avoid ruining my car on the first day of ownership!

A castle youth hostel??? Who'd have thought it.
