Do I sell my Z4 and get a 330d convertible?

I'm really stumped right now.I bought my Z4 2 years ago just after I sold my motorbikes, keeping me in weekend toys.I'm just about to complete the build of my dream bike ( a 1987 BMW Dakar racer replica) and fear that I'll hardly use the Z once I have the bike completed. It spends most of it's time parked on my drive monday to friday doing nothing and gets used at weekends If I'm going anywhere. I do up to 35k pa in a company car,and can use that at weekends If I choose. My wife runs a '56 plate Toyota Yaris 1.3 and loves it. We also have a dog, albeit a small one ( Jack Russell) ,and on trips to the beach this summer we have used my company car as the dog is a PIA in the footwell, though I really wanted to go in the Z. A car with 4 seats would mean we could put the dog in his crate on the back seat meaning I could enjoy my days out.Getting a more interesting company car is out of the question as I work for a car manufacturer who right now doesn't make anything remotely interesting ( Toyota). My sensible head is telling me to sell both the Yaris and the Z4 and get one car that we both like and we can get full use out of,but also I'm reluctant to sell my Z which I have to say I'm rather attached to.My wife thinks it is a good idea and we rekon that a 330d Convertible ticks all boxes. It is a quality car, open roof when needed, decent mpg, room for the dog, nice to drive and plenty of oomph for me :driving: (especially when chipped - won't tell SWMBO), and of course 6 cylinders. We're looking at an '07 or '08 model with the folding hard top.Anyone got any feedback on the 330d,I'd be interested to hear if they are any good. Also,am I just about to do something very stupid?.

All replies welcome, even rude ones lol......... :D

That is why I got a 4 seater as well as a 2 seater convertible, best of both worlds :)

330d convertible? One of the best cars out there IMHO...

Terrific engine. Moreso as you can get a manual version unlike the 335D...

Great choice...

Between me and my missus we have 3 cars (Z4, MINI S and a 4x4 Diahatsu), 1 motorbike and 1 commuter scooter.

Thinking of selling all 3 cars at the moment and buying an X6!

Defo want a manual.Neither of us like auto's.I think the 330d is an amazing car and will give us everything we want. better get the polish out and give the Z a spruce up, she may be for sale.

bigshurv, sounds like a plan. Wouldn't rule out the 330 petrol either, you might find it to be cheaper on the purchase price and TBH if you don't drive them hard then the fuel costs are OK.

I have thought about that Mike, Chrissie does about 9k pa,I do about 7.5k in the Z, so all in 16,500 pa.The magic petrol vs diesel crossover is roughly 15k pa,so we're only just over it. We've also toyed with the idea of just keeping the Z,but sometimes we both want more than 2 seats.

Luggage rack on the Z4 boot + dog cage + bungy cords = result :D

Seriously though, the 330d is a cracking engine. I'm not a massive fan of 4-seater convertibles - they usually look out of proportion to me - but the 3-series is one of the better-looking ones.

Ally, I'm not a big fan of 4 seat convertibles either, but same as you, the 3 series is the best looking one outside the new Maserati Gran Cabrio.... :D I have also thought about bungying the dog crate to the bootlid..........

I can't think of anything else that meets your specific requirements if it has to be BMW.

it doesn't have to be a BMW,but we've exhausted the other makes,Saab ( too boring), Merc CLK (too farty), Audi ( no thanks, unreliable POS), plus all these have a fabric roof. The Volvo has a folding hard top ( I'll NEVER be old enough to have a Volvo!!).What else is there?. We decided that a folding hard top is the way to go for an everyday car that is left all day at a work address, gym and tesco's car parks etc and and all year round driver. I've found one that I like, but I can get a nice Z4M roadster for the same money and boy is that a distraction, but we'd never run that as a main car.

330d is a brilliant car, good luck in finding a decent vert though. Not many about really, and make sure the swirl flaps have been done, or blanks in their place. Plus the egr valve can play up. But nothing too serious really.

Remapped they will do 45mpg and beat a 330 petrol! 330 petrols are very nice, but if you can get a diesel then i would.

I run a 320d as well as the Z4. Have to say the diesel has a lot to recommend it, and as an everyday car I love it. But as a replacement for the Z4 - no way!

Sure the 330d is an amazing car with probably more usable power than the Zed even, but I just can't get enthusiastic about a diesel - they just sound so awful and un-sporty, not a car to get enthusiastic about in any way IMHO.

You mention that a Z4M is tempting - so why not go for an M3 convertible (even one a year or 2 older?)

U couldn't sgo far wrong with the amazing 320d convert Andy is swllin at the mo if the z has to go

The problem is I don't really want the Z to go. I've got a two weeks off work from tonight so plenty of time to waz around in the Z.I think I'll end up keeping it as nice as the 330d convertible is, it's no where near the looker,or as involving as the Z is.

I shall look again in the spring, but I may just upgrade my Z for a facelift with low miles or even an M roadster if I'm feeling flush/brave.

Sounds exactly the same as me, my wife swayed me more than anything saying she didnt think that any 3 series cab, saloon or coupe looked anywhere near a good as the Z4 so I bought an old banger which I use for work, getting the kids and my bike around and use the Z4 for pleasure.

As long as the banger is reliable it shouldn't cost a penny to run due not running the Z4 during the week :D

Trying to sell mine now to get an ///Mr though :D
