Do I not have an oil level warning light????

Yep, Mine warns me when I near less than a quarter between the dipstick mark with a yellow light after shutting off. It will stay on during driving when it's nearing the lower mark. It just works. (M54 3.0i)

+1

Sorry to thread crash but no need to start a new one.
My car is a 2003 z4 3.0i
My oil light comes on (orange) when I've turned my car off. I've checked my
Oil and it's just below max.

What's the problem? Lol?

Thanks!

Just to cover all the bases, does the oil light come on briefly when you turn on the ignition? Starts yellow, turns red, then goes out. If not, the problem is the little light in the cluster, otherwise, it could be the level sensor, or the system is just not as sensitive as you think it should be. Or maybe a bad connection somewhere.

It is a level sensor btw,, but different than the N52 type, it's not just a pressure switch, so it costs a lot more than 5 quid.

Thanks for the reply, I'll check the oil light upon ignition tonight when I drive home from work. They seem a fortune from BMW but eBay has some that are cheaper.

It's only a simple sensor so I'm sure it'd be fine non genuine...

Any idea on the location of these sensors?

I'll buy a pressure switch too, just to be sure.

No,
intermittent yellow when switching off = refill please, getting low.
Continuous yellow during driving = moron, you really need to give me some oil now.
Red = low oil pressure, you are killing me :-)

Close enough

Pressure switch is at backside of the base of the oil filter. Remove filter and remove as much oil as possible from base to minimise how much oil comes out of switch port.

Level sensor is bolted on thru the bottom of oil pan. Obviously, you should drain oil first. FWIW, I saw a reference somewhere suggesting failure of the level sensor is indicated 25-30 sec. after starting the car, anything else is the usual low oil level or pressure. I wouldn't say that lack of such indication is proof the level sensor is functioning properly, but maybe it is less likely to be the culprit.

Well... I fitted a new sensor this weekend, I now have an oil warning light. Result!

Although it has gone yellow twice and my oil is full......

False low level warnings? That's annoying! You might double check the wiring connections, if the heater's not getting full current, it could throw off the readings. Level sensor works by heating the probe, then timing how long it takes to cool. Cools a lot faster if not covered in oil.

Only other explanations I can think of is faulty sensor (!) or part is meant for a different car. Either seems unlikely. AFAIK, there's no silly computer calibration routine that needs to be run either.

In other words, I have no idea. :?

Thanks for the reply. I did think possibly a faulty sensor or maybe the wrong one for a car with a deeper sump. I'll be checking my oil level on my lunch break but the yellow light it intermittent. I don't really want to fit another, mainly because it means dropping the oil... Again! Oh and removing the huge sump guard... Gah!

I'll report back with oil level results and then look to remove it and try another. Pretty damn certain it's plugged right in though so I can rule that out.
