Do i need to update satnav software?

Just bought a 2003 Z4 3.0... I get the impression from the old lady previous owner that the satnav firmware has never been upgraded.. how do i check? and assuming it has a very old version do i need to upgrade a version at a time or can i jump to the newest version...?

Also... if i swap out the head unit will that affect the flip up satnav screen in any way or are they independant of each other?

a search of google and here hasnt pulled up much so assuming they are stupid questions (but i still need the answer lol sorry!)

There are loads of articles on here about upgrading the satnav firmware and maps - easiest way I find to search is to open google and enter "site:z4-forum.com update satnav" into the search box.

Ok so you have the professional nav and you are asking 2 questions...

1. In relation to firmware you can download it yourself or buy on a disc (usually with updated map disc too for around £20) from one of many online suppliers. Any map disc you buy from someone other than BMW will not actually be legal but they seem to work without any major issues (from what I have heard from others - hehe). We are not supposed to discuss hooky map discs on the forum but you could PM me with an un-related question if you wish :wink:

2. As far as replacing the head unit goes my advice would be don't. All the aftermarket head units I have seen in Zeds look sh1te. If you have the nav screen get an Intravee II and an Alpine KCA-420i and plug an iPod in. Do a forum search for Intravee you can buy them brand new from toysinyourcar.com for £150 and a previously enjoyed Alpine can be had for £30 off eBay.

Thanks both.. that pretty much covers it... there may have been some dodgy looking map discs in the car when i bought it which i will obviously dispose of and replace with BMW ones... and i shall go download the firmware now cheers.

No idea what an Intravee II is but since my only reason for wanting to change out the head unit is to gain ipod connectivity seems I will be doing some research in that direction!

Brand new Intravee and second hand Alpine for £185 all in. You will find many people on EBay sell second hand Intravees with with second hand Alpines for well over £200. Strange but true.

I doubt you will want to buy BMW map discs when you the price! Whilst we are obliged to point out that non BMW discs are not legal we are not encouraging you to buy one for a 2003 Zed.

Success... managed to download and install v32 into the Z4.. thanks for the help guys. Also inadvertently found out how to pair my phone to the car whilst I was rooting through the threads which I didn't think was possible so bonus! Though it has thrown up a bit of an issue that I will have to start another post for!
