Do i get a M bonet?

Just my opinion Jonny. But... if you end up creating a total M copy aren't you at risk of ending up with a 2.0l car that's 'All show and no go'? :poke:

I would normally say in the real world there is minimal difference in performance from an M to a 2.0 (0-30, 10-40 etc) but with the with massive BBK and the unsprung weight they add, i think you may be right

Jonny essex, hand on heart, on reflection do you wish you had started this on an M? i know you're too far down the road now to start over again on an M

Whether it's admitted or not, human nature will rather it be an M.

I went down the same route with my Smart (albeit I didn't spend near enough as much)

There is a part of me that wishes that I had an s54 under the bonnet but as has said before, running costs, speeding tickets and general road conditions really does lead one to question if all that extra car is going to be useful.

lets not start on poor JE again, hes happy to arse about with his 2.0L and that's fine.

the question does beg tho that if he has changed engine, brakes, gearbox/diff (assume you would if your doing the engine), all the bits associated with the engine, seats, wheels, skirts, bumpers, bonnet is there much left of the original car which is the reason he ststed keeping it.

personally i would be looking at this and chopping in what can only be described as a minter (JE your car now).

Hm,

I'd say no - don't get the bonnet. I think your car looks great, and i think the M bonnet looks great (that's why i have one..) but if you continue down the line of replicating an M, you're going to end up with a car that nobody can see is anything other than a standard M car with a slightly different front end.

Whilst there's plenty of time to debate whether you should of just bought an M or not, if you're adamant you prefer to mod your car to something you love - that's great, but i think if you keep adding M parts, you're going to end up with an M, and nobody will know that you've actually got a non-M and improved it - rendering all your work kinda irrelevant. Ironically the only way people would ever know it's NOT an M is the lower performance in racey situations.

Tough one - i think it would look good, and your car is a great example - but to outsiders it may end up just looking like an OEM car. At the end of the day, it's your car - and your choices so far have led you to the nice looking vehicle you've got, so go with your instincts. :)

I would love to see what Jonny would have created by now if he had started with an M as his base car.

i would personally get a new roof im thinking blue would look nice, you have had the red one for a month now :D
your car looks great already....or do you like the reaction your ideas and mods get from forum members.

It would look just like a standard ///M - he'd be too busy driving and enjoying the power to be bothered with modding it...

Buying a brake kit for looks alone is a little ott. There's a reason it came with small brakes and an engine swap will be a complete pain in the ass. If you can stand the Z being off the road that long and then trying to sort all the little problems that will follow! I admire the passion and I agree with heart over head but seriously a bit of sense has to start to come at some point!

The S54 is worth more than any mod you can possibly do to any Z.

Depends on priorities really. I'd get the V8 conversion done first. However, as your quad exhaust Etc wont be compatible, the best option is sticking to style mods.

I'd get the bonnet. It'll look good.

Some ///M badges on the boot and wings would compliment the look really well

Probably a better way to look at it, ask yourself are you looking for performance or looks?

If just looks then you're doing the right thing.
If you want performance, there's only so much you'll get from the 2L. An engine transplant is going to be economically too much money, resale wise will be a nightmare. If someone wants a 3L, they'll buy a car made from the factory, not an aftermarket one. If you want that 3L, then as many have said, probably worth finding another car. There's loads of one owner loved cars, I found mine. 30,000 miles and looks like brand new.

Don't feel you should get pushed into getting more power due to pub banter here of 'it's only a 2L', carry on doing the mods that make you happy.

Regarding the M bonnet. I'm not a fan of cars that are dressed up to look like something they are not, keep it individual

Twincharge the 2.0? (Super charger and turbo charger) ;). Volvo have made a 300hp 2.0 doing this.

That way you get power of a larger turbine and decent response, keep your engine and do away with the chocolate manifold :)

This.
I fail to see what all the fuss is about with the ///M bonnet.
For a grand I'd be getting
A) A coachbuilder to put my own spec of creases in a scrapyard bonnet (maybe a power bulge, rather than trouser pleats)
B) a crate if beer for whoever suggested it.

Genius

Is there a big bore kit and turbo for the 2L without going overboard and losing reliability.

What could you bore the engine out to ?

Am I the only person that didn't know the ///M has a different bonnet!?

I had no idea either! They always look good when I see then in the rear view mirror. Best bit of the zed IMO.
