DMF Rattle

This rattle when idle has been with the car since I bought it years ago. I didn't know what the hell it was at first; sitting at tick-over in neutral the car gives off an annoying rattle making it sound like a diesel! Depress the clutch and the rattle disappears.
Anyway, I've since found out from the forum its the DMF, the question is can the rattle be silenced without big bills? (apart from keeping my foot on the clutch :D )

Most probably is the DMF but nothing to worry about. They can rattle on for years. I've only just changed mine for OEM and you can already hear a slight chatter off of the clutch. It's a BMW trait. You can eliminate it completely if you go down machine monkeys route and fit a single mass flywheel but then driving would become more of a workout.
My old 3 series did this, so does a few of my mates BMW's. Just one of those quirks.

Marlon,

It could be either the release bearing or the flywheel. When you turn the engine off, does it make a noise?

Mike

What do you mean - like a rattle after I've turned off the ignition?

Thanks - this is what I guessed, I can live with it.

my z4 coupe did this, as does Seans coupe, its just one of those things that I'd have lived without rather than a £500+ bill.

I wonder if it would put off potential buyers when trying to sell?

I know you are not selling Marlon and I know we realise that it is nothing to worry about, but I'll bet some buyers would walk away if they heard it.

Possibly - it didn't put me off though :)

Hi Mike, when I turn off the engine it gives a little 'death rattle' - so its DMF, thanks for the call fella

Marlon. Does it give an actual rattle or does it sound like something. ..venting. only word I can summon at the moment. Mine has this annoying rattle when HOT only. But gives this weird venting noise when it cut the power. Regardless of operating temp. And nothing is leaking at all.

Its a rattle only - consistent with the noise the DMF knocks out when idling in neutral, no 'venting'. Listening to it again on the drive home its really something and nothing tbh

 Just drive it.. As I said on the phone, it may get nosier, and eventually judder when moving off, but it won't just fail catastrophically and leave you stranded.

Yeah, just drive it Marlon but expect your wallet to eventually judder! :)

Depending on how bad the rattle is,I would myself have it changed along with a new clutch and have the benefit of a quiet motor, rather than take a hit when you come to sell.
