DIY service, who does it?

Hi guys,

Just wanted to get a general opinion from everyone.
Does anyone carry out their own services and general maintainance for themselves; eg: brake pads, oil change/sparks etc (im refering to older vehicles her of course)?
Im relativly competent(ish) with working under the engine bay and will be concidering carrying out most work on the car myself (keeping all reciepts etc as evidence of the works).

I understand that most will concider deviating from the full service stamps would potentially lower the residual value of the car.

So, I put the question out there......

Cheers,

John.

I do my own as I care not a jot of the resale value, This forum contains most if not all the info you need to do most jobs on the car.

guess it depends on the potential drop in value if you did this and whether you care about it or not. if there's a likelihood you'll need to shift your car quick in the next year or so due to your circumstances then is it worth it? however if there's no reason why your car won't be yours for the next few years then i see no problem.

i guess the difference come resale is whether the potential buyer decides you did it yourself to cut costs, or if you're a genuine enthusiast, a folder of photographs with receipts etc would help mitigate the risk of them thinking you're a penny pincher.

having sold a 10 year old m3 earlier this year and had people grumbling about the lack of bmw service history, i would say, come resale you'll always get the timewasters. that had a folder full of receipts, some big work done by a bmw garage in the 12 months prior to sale and i still got people asking silly questions, needless to say, i don't think i was far wrong when i suggested they look at upping their budget by a chunk to get what they wanted.

I fit brakes and make general repairs myself but do care about resale so use BMW for servicing.

x2 on mine although will probably be using an Indi as it's 6 years old and often do a better job.

The wife's car I'll do it all myself though.

good to hear your views guys. It reasures me with. I guess the main thing is if theres anything I feel thats out of my league I would just bite the bullet and head to an indi.
