I have never done any car mechanics whatsoever but would like to be able to carry out some basic stuff on my Zed, or even add some mods etc. Where would be a good place to start, are there any books available for the E86. I would appreciate any advice on this matter - Thanks very much.

If you've never done anything at all on a car I'd sign up for a college course and get some basic mechanical skill. From memory now is the time of year most of these start.

In parallel with that you can start simple jobs from oil change, brake pad changes, etc. Great how-to guides on here and bags of videos on you tube

You'll also need to build up a decent set of tools inc. jack, stands, spanners, etc.

I wouldn't say I'm naturally hands-on being a bit more of a thinker before doing. There's plenty of info out there and good guides on youtube for simple jobs.
Start with being able to lift the car safely and a set of tools - Halfords professional range aren't bad. Get an OBD cable and software so you can do your own diagnosis (this forum is usually better than the Dealer network who just seem to guess at fixes...).

Oil changes, brakes etc. are all easy once you see how things work/fit together, plenty of advice here too.

what do you want to do on it? I'm pretty sure any job you want to do will have been covered by a DIY at some point on this forum.
