Whatever you do, don't do what I once did - I took the brakes apart, couldn't wind the calipers back to get the new pads in, messed around a bit, and ended up not even being able to get the old pads back in ....
Eventually had to open the bleed valve to get the old pads back in and then take it to the garage with my tail between my legs.

You dont have to wind rear the calipers back, the handbrake is on inboard drums 
If you have trouble pushing the pistons in, use a g-clamp and remove the lid off the break fluid reservoir and MAKE SURE IT DOESNT OVERFLOW!
Dont forget to GENTLY pump the brake pedal after each corner to reset the piston.
Dead easy, just look for videos on Youtube for 3/5 series, theres plenty!

For the E46 but i think they are the same.
I changed my own discs and pads with (a LOT of) help from a mechanic friend. I would say it is all do-able yourself. The only thing which was a total pig was adjusting the handbrake to get the rear discs off which took plenty of trial and error.
