Ditching RFTs - Advice Needed

Hi all,

I am going to bite the bullet and ditch my Bridgestone Potenza RFTs. They have a decent amount of tread left, but I'm confident I can stick these on eBay and reduce the cost to change.

I am going to be fitting the tyres to my BMW 108 wheels, and just want people to confirm I am ordering the right tyre/sizes. I am after the Michelin PSS that I hear so many positive reviews about on here. I could also do with some guidance of where to order from.

Do I need to be looking for the Michelin Pilot Super Sports, over the Michelin Pilot Sport 3s? If so, not many places seem to stock the former (i.e BlackCircles, TyreLeader). Where do you guys get your PSS's from? I won't need fitting, just mail order. Are the below sizes optimal for the 108s? They are the current sizes of my Bridgestones.

Fronts
225/40 ZR18 92Y

Rears
255/35 ZR18 94Y

Does the speed rating matter (would both W and Y be sufficient)?

Thanks guys.

You wont get Mich PSS in the rear sizes of:

255 35 18

so you will either ahve to go for

245 40 18

or choose a different tyre.

Pilot Sport 3's are a totally different tyre and not as good as the PSS.

Another brand to look at is Gooldyear Eagle F1's or Hancocks or Vedrestian

Hope this helps

Pleantly of other tyre discussions on the forum as well using search function.

I've just bought 4 Goodyear Eagle asymmetrics 2's from tyreleader for £360 to fit my 108's. They were only slightly cheaper than black circles in all honesty.

Thanks guys. Will check out other brand recommendations. Goodyear F1s are considerably less than the Michelin PSSs. From TyreLeader.co.uk:

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 225/40 R18 92Y @ £75.09 x 2
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 255/35 R18 94Y @ £111.99 x 2
Total : £374.16

Michelin Pilot Super Sport 255/40 ZR18 95Y @ £151.49 x 2
Michelin Pilot Super Sport 225/40 ZR18 92Y @ £118.09
Total: £539.16

Vredestein Ultrac Vorti 225/40 ZR18 92Y @ £63.49 x 2
Vredestein Ultrac Vorti 255/35 ZR18 94Y @ $103.89 x 2
Total: £334.56

Drive my tyres fairly hard Chris and I have been very happy with my GoodYear Eagle F2 Assymetrics (and good in the wet) - for price they are excellent. Have used Falkens which I also found good but wear was a lot higher than with the GY.

With the Pilot SS you are after the optimum tyre and so the price reflects that - often fitted to ///Ms so sizes are slightly different.

Lots of folk seem pleased with the GY Assymetrics and they are a popular fitment at the moment. Be aware, they take at least 2-300 miles to bed in and give their best but after that excellent.

Thanks for the view Paul. In terms of wet/dry and noise the F1 Assymetrics 2 out do the Vredesteins.

The other question I have is; what do people do once they have moved to non-RFTs? Buy a genuine BMW Mobility Kit, carry a tan of cheap tyre weld, have AA roadside and home recovery (lol)?

Going to hit the order on the below from TyreLeader.co.uk. Anyone care to give it one last check? Everything look OK for my 108's? Thanks.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 225/40 R18 92Y £74.99
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 255/35 R18 94Y £111.79
Total : £373.56

Good to go :)

Excellent Tyre choice

Good choice. The only downside is that they deliver through DPD who in my opinion are one of the worst delivery companies out there. Still, my tyres (same as yours) did finally arrive today.

Thanks guys. I've gone ahead with the order. They are being delivered to work, so I'm hoping its easy to find and someone will always be available in the post room and/or reception. What sort of delivery time did you have?

Will stick the current run flats up on eBay or Gumtree. Quite a lot of life left in them, might be able to get £60 each for the rears and £40 for the fronts - make the sting a little bit more bearable!

What do you guys do regarding puncture kits?

And what pressure do you run front/rear with the F1s?

Thanks again for the help/advice/double checking!

^ What Roundozo said, great tyres and deal but DPD were a 'mare. As mentioned give the scrubbing-in time I reckon it was about 4-500 miles before I felt really confident in them but now they are very secure

I run

33/34 Psi front
36 Psi rear

In my goodyears in your sizes and the car drives how I like it :)

I have a slime kit in case of a puncture and AA brakedown cover for if that doesn't work

Chris, I carry an electric plug in inflator and two cans of goo and an RAC card - the goo doesn't always work, depends on the type of puncture.

On my Zed I use 32psi front and 34psi rear - I've found just 2psi either way can make a big difference to how the Zed feels so do experiment - others on the Forum have their own settings.

Thanks guys. For £24 I'll invest in a Slime Compressor Kit.

Will experiment with pressures. Both of you suggested well below the recommended 2.2bar and 2.7bar quoted on the inside of the door. Is the higher pressure because they are RFT?

Hmm, that's how I understand it Chris - too high for non runflats - runflats have a harder sidewall and need higher pressures. (I'm no specialist but the lower pressures work for me)

I've got the F1s on the front now! So currently running non-RFT upfront and RFT rear.

TyreLeader were very good - tracking number against my order pretty much straight away. Got a text message from DPD saying they would be delivered in an hour window, and they were. Bit annoying that the fronts and rears are sent separately! The fronts came from the Netherlands and the rears are still en-route from Germany - hopefully be here tomorrow or Monday.

I've now got Goodyear Eagle F1s all round...and blimey, what a difference! :driving:

No crashing/thuds as I go over small to medium sized deviations in the road. No more tram-lining and getting caught in indentations in the road from heavy vehicles. The car just feels so much sure when pressing on through a corner, but is so much nicer to cruise around in when just pootling about. Definitely recommend this change to people!

I cannot fault TyreLeader at all. A couple points to note however. If you are ordering four tyres, and the fronts and rears are of differing size, they will dispatch these as two separate shipments. Not really an issue, just something to note as you will get two deliveries, and in my case these were on different days. The fronts came very quickly, then the rears.

DPD seemed perfect to me. The tracking website was updated regularly, and they text me to give me a time slot that they would deliver in. Can't fault them. The DOT date on the fronts were 2215 and on the rears one was 2315 and one 2415. So the tyres are very new - not old stock that has been sat around.

TyreLeader customer service was decent too. I raised a ticket as I didn't know the tyres would be sent in two different shipments, so queried why I had two order numbs yet had only received one tracking number. They replied within an hour and confirmed they would let me know the tracking number as soon as it was available, and later than evening they did exactly that.

Would definitely use them again.

I joined the merry band of non-RFTs today - Goodyear Eagle Asymmetrics all round. Got a nice long run this weekend, so looking forward to bedding them in. Had a chat with my insurance company & they were happy that they didn't come under the modification heading
