I thought about just sticking them in the bin, but wasn't sure if it was allowed or if I wanted to have them dumped in landfill.

What? - our council tips will take any metal from you its a revenue stream selling it on for processing. Some items you have to pay to tip mostly DIY building materials but not garden waste. Oil no problem but try tipping tins of paint and all the workers are running towards you in hazmat suitsolice:
