Hi everyone.

Just joined and looking forward to attending a few meets. I have an issue with my motorised screen and hope i can get some advice. The screen in the dash comes up and down however it has gone from being fine.... To flickering..... To now being completely blank!
Has anyone any ideas on what it could be and how i can fix it.
Many thanks :)

Hi and welcome to the forum
Sorry can't help with your problem but I'm sure someone will be along, a bit more info on the Zed you have may help

Are you sure that it is an E89 screen? It sounds more like an E85/E86 type issue.

If e89 there are two possible issues, connections or failure of the display unit.

The former requires removal of some dash to check the cables the latter a new (eBay) unit.

It's a very unusual issue on an e89

There are articles on here and other forums showing how to remove trim and screen so you just need to do a little googling.

eBay do sell screens if needed from time to time.
Eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/252048874606

Have you tried a reset? Power up the car/ignition on. Hold down the volume control as if muting but keep it held for 30 seconds.

First time I went to BMW they put my key in their reader, I asked what work had been done on the car, they said it had a new screen fitted whilst under previous ownership.
So they do fail.

Thanks for the help. Problem is still there. I have tried to find a post / video for the removal of the centre trim to check the wires to the centre display but have been unsuccessful.
Does anyone have a link? :)

My previous E89 very occasionally displayed a blank red screen which would return to normal by simply switching the engine off and back on. Thankfully my current E89 has not shown any display problems in 2 years of ownership.

Hi all.

Still the same issue but I have managed to get a video of it. It doesn't do it all the time but on every journey it will start to do this. Then either be ok or go to a black screen, then a negative look and then back to normal again. Hope this video helps.

Do you have Carly for BMW? If you do then do a fault check, it should give you some info (hopefully)
Could potentially be a replacement screen is required, there are a few on eBay at the moment (actually there was a week ago but can only find one now). They normally range from sensible to stupid money.

On a side note, if you do decide to replace it then I'd happily take the old one off your hands as I'm working on a project that requires the housing with the motor facility :D

Thanks everyone.

It still flashes, goes off and then back on

It actually takes soemthing away from the pleasure of driving it.

Im going to try an auto electrician as it might be a connection but failing that its going to have to go :headbang:

Hi everyone.
Need a little help understanding how the centre display is removed in my E89 z4?
Need to check the connection for the display but cannot find any info and don’t want to start just pulling at things in case I damage something.

Any advice/links or info greatly welcomed :driving:

Roughly follow some of http://e89.zpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1148144 (alas this is left-hand drive, so you need to transpose it a bit), ignore the bit about the key surround as it remains where it is on right-hand drive.
Once the large trim panel is removed you need to remove the centre vent (couple of screws) then you have access to the two lower screws that hold the the iDrive screen unit in. You also need to remove the centre speaker grill to allow access to the two back screws of the screen.
That should sort it for you.
