Disk's and Pads - Non Performance

Hi Guys...

Its time to get some new front pads, and whilst I'm at it, I think ill change the disks. I have a 03 E85 3.0 auto. I have had a google and a search through here, but most information seems to be about 'performance' brake pads etc. I'm insured with AXA who look on anything with 'performance' written on them with a very dim view, so I was wondering what peoples experiences were with 'standard' stuff was. I can get them changed a the local garage for £300 for the lot, but was contemplating doing it myself. I wasn't going to go for Pagid, or EBC etc ,but maybe Brembo's (only cos they are convenient in halfords!)

Any ideas?

Also, why would performance pads make my car more of an insurance risk as it will stop better?! Unless they think I'll drive faster....

Personally, from a cost perspective, I'd get brembo discs of next day brakes (extremely cheap website for supplying brembo brakes) and I'd get textar e-pads from eurocarparts with a discount code.

Neither of these are performance, just standard OEM quality kit, and neither would need to be declared insurance wise.

Brembo discs are great quality in my experience and the textar e-pads I've fitted to two members cars who both seem very happy with them. They have reduced brake dust, reduced braking noise, and reduced brake fade.
 
RJS fitted Textar ePads to mine this weekend. Silent and grippy can't say about brake dust really yet as they've only been on a couple of days. Like 'em though :thumbsup:
 
Why would your insurance need to know about what brand pads/disc. Surely they would only need to be informed if you upgraded the calipers etc.

I've just fitted some brembo max disc and red stuff pads which are different to standard and have no intention on tell my insurer
 
Are the e-Pads the ones that are £85? (minus a 25% discount if you have the right code)

Any merit on them over anything else?
 
The cost me £91 with a £15 discount, so I guess so. They're called ePads on the site though :poke: :D

As RJS says they are quieter, cleaner and (though I have not tested them hard yet) apparently less fade.
 
Hmmm, tough one. Just did a quick search on here on their merits too. I was about to order Pagid discs and pads as a combo to replace the god awful squealing ones fitted on the car at the moment!

They do look lovely. They go silver when you use them IIRC, but still having the black in the wheel centre and round the edge will look very tidy :thumbsup:

Is it drilled or grooved discs that shred pads ?

TBH, pagid should stop your issues.

With the last set of pads I did, I noticed that there are some very clearly identifiable vibration spots that will cause the squeaking. On Bing's, they'd been vibrating so much the metal was actually shiny on the caliper! A bit of copper grease on ALL contact surfaces should have them nice and quiet.

Yeah, bit of a revelation for me - it was really, really obvious what was making the noise and it wasn't the pads themselves. Tbh, probably could have done what Ste did and just clean them up, grease them well and stick back together and they'd have been fine. However the rears were really sh1t quality pads and I had a new full set just in case so it made sense to change them. Well, to have RJS change them :oops:

I have them fitted on the rear, can't fault them but decided to go for some thing different on the front as that's where most of the stopping power comes from.
