Disconnections before welding

Thought I would ask on here in case BMW's are special.
A friend is needing to do some MIG welding on his 3 series (54 plate from memory) and was asking me what electrical items he should disconnect before welding.
Searching the internet some people talk about just the battery others say leave the battery connected but disconnect the ECU.
 
I was only thinking about this the other day. I'm not planning any welding on mine though. Back in the day on my 850 Mini we'd just unplug the alternator, I did wonder if it was the same for more modern cars..
 
BMW states disconnect battery (remove ground lead) .. and remove battery if near the weld site FWIW
