Disconnecting the battery to remove the steering wheel

Done this plenty of times on many cars, but it is only my Z4 that now concerns me, or am I reading too much into forum posts?

Is it just a matter of disconnecting the battery, leaving the boot open, waiting half an hour before removing the steering wheel to put a new stitch-on steering cover on it, and when I put the wheel back on just re-connecting it and re-programming the radio? I have read many things where the car will not start again, or something has gone wrong.

Am I being made paranoid by the internet again!?

I have never disconnected the battery on any car when removing an airbag, including many Z4's and never had a problem. I just make a point of not switching the ign on whilst doing the job.

When I fitted my RoyalWheels refurb'd wheel I followed the advice I'd been given here and on other 'how to' guides and disconnected the battery - waited 20 minutes - then removed airbag and wheel.
The only thing I had to reset was the clock.

When I went to Royals to collect and have mine fitted , he didn’t disconnect the battery. Just don’t switch the ignition on while it’s in bits.

Knowing my luck the airbag will go off as I unplug or plug it back in! Is the official advice to unplug, just in case?

Disconnect the battery just to be on the safe side, I did when I had my last Zed steering wheel done by Royal and no issues after

Lol yeah i sure as heck would be disconnecting the batt.. crazy if you don't. My mate who runs a BMW shop here in dxb just spend a good few hours a few weeks ago in the E.R. as a side airbag deployed while he was stuffing around with the door and steering wheel.

SAFETY FIRST!! Disconnect that battery!

Ok so Officially disconnect the battery :police:

Hi
When you disconnect the battery and re-connecting,you have to re-programming the clock and windows. Radio No.

I never disconnected the battery when removing the airbag.

Maybe you don't ,if I was asked advice on the subject ,I would say disconnect the battery for peace of mind and safety being paramount .Its not a big deal to reprogram the windows and clock.

Great link, thanks.

Looks like I have myself a job this weekend then. As well has lifting the living room floor and re-laying it in the conservatory, changing the front discs on my Santa Fe, and finishing decorating in anticipation of my new carpet arriving Monday.

Also ,you have to reprogramming the date.

Disconnecting the battery discombobulates the entire Gregorian calendar! Wow, this is trickier than I thought.
