Discoloured E89 pure white nappa leather

Hi

I have a Z4 with the pure white package nappa leather, which is still in good nick, the bolster has slight marks which was easily dealt with Liquid Leather Scuff master so I confidently went to colour the creases on the seat base.

Not sure whether you can make out in the photos but where I painted over the creases it's almost got a green tinge to the colour, now the bolster coloured perfectly but the finish on the seat base seems a bit odd

Any advice ? I can mix to match the colour better and add more thin coats but don't want to mess it up ..

Thank you !

Hi,
Did you clean the seats/leather before applying the dye. I have the same leather but intend using Colourlock. They were brilliant when I restored an ivory leather seat on a Jag. It came up a treat. I emailed them some pictures of the seat and they told me exactly what to use. They also have some brilliant instructions on their website. I dealt with a chap called Ram who couldn't have been more helpful. Their email is [email protected]. Mark it for the attention of Ram and see what he says. He normally replies within a couple of hours

Forgot to say but they actually mix the dye to match your seats. I just sent them the Reg No and VIn No as I wasn't sure of the exact colour on the Jag. They checked it for me. I think the dye was £20 ish. I'm sure the BMW nappa is on their website anyway. The entire kit to do four seats was £60 ish but it transformed the seat. I haven't done the others yet

Thanks bulldog!

Yeah I got liquid leather package that mixed the BMW colour for me.. turned out perfect when I did the bolsters but the seat base wasn't as nice (maybe that has worn differently ... forgot to say I prep it with LTT auto foam leather cleaner...

I used the same kit on my pure white leather and had no problems. The only thing I can think of if you had cleaned the seat before hand it had not dried not fully. May be worth trying to reclean the seat to see if it removes the marks.

Thanks Phillp27

It's not too bad only up close,.. I have sealed it with LTT auto protect after painting the leather ... now I've scrubbed it again with LTT auto foam, it looks ok from afar.

Is it worth applying another layer to the whole section of the seat cushion again ?

I use liquid leather and I've not seen this issue. I'd suggest speaking with them for advice.

Thank Manic, going to fire an enquiry across before I do anything drastic to the leather ...

Interestingly I cleaned the Z today and wiped over the seat with an interior trim dressing product from AD. The painted bits of the bolster went green!

A leather cleaner and a brush brought it back in shade so my thinking here is that you're suffering with a chemical reaction just like I saw today.

I'll be spending some more time on my seat soon to get the touch up leather paint removed and re tinted properly where there is wear.

Oh no Manic ! Hope you get it sorted

I ended up mixing a bigger batch of the dye, adding a bit more white to the shade and covered the whole seat base with another pass... drying so far and it looks ok and the shade is blending nicely ... I only done a small area of the bolster before but how do I get a nice smooth finish on the bigger area ? I use a bigger sponge similar to the little one that came in the box, I seem to get brush marks on the painted area.. is it a matter of adding more thinner layers to get a smooth finish ?

Yes the key is several thin coats. It's really only designed to be used on small defects. If you do a large area it's best to spray it on (special spray gear required)

Thanks all, I ended up doing the whole back cushion with a slightly lighter shade (4 very thin coats) and it turned out ok, just conditioned it this morning and the colour now looks a lot more uniform ... will wait a few days and apply LTT auto protect ... phew ! Retrim avoided !
