Disappointed with my pipes

Gave the tail pipes a clean today and not impressed with my work, am I expecting too much to get them back to as new condition or is my technique wrong? I use degreaser and wire wool, followed by AG metal polish to finish.

I've never used AG, I always use Autosol. PVR made a special drill bit out of a bolt, two nuts, two bits of circular cut wood that he then secured some 0000 grade wire wool between. The wood is about 5mm smaller diameter than the pipes. Using a drill takes the elbow grease out of doing the insides. The key is keeping them clean between use of this though, I do mine with a cloth and some Autosol every time I wash the car. Quite often I just give them a quick wipe afte I've been for a drive too, whilst they are warm. The outsides are just a ball ache to do - at least I could simply pull the tips off my 3.0 to clean them...

Maybe try some Autosol first before getting into construction of a specialist drill bit ? I don't have one, I just borrowed PVRs last time I visited :D

They don't look too bad though, I've seen worse

Try toothpaste and toothbrush. Rinse and then polish. Works a treat.

Otherwise just clay them, although that can be quite expensive over time as the clay does get somewhat 'hammered'.

Autosol;)

Can use a cutting paste with wet n dry first on inside
Then use elbow grease on external
N I'm anal haha I wipe after use;)

Toothpaste. Can't wait to try that one. Hope it's as good as you say.

Remember to use your wife's toothbrush, not your own ....

It still needs a bit of elbow grease but it's cheap and you don't even need added fluoride :D

I'd say wire wooling them every time may have tarnished them somewhat. Proper autosol will bring them back

Yup
Both inside and outside
I'm so anal I do the entire rear boxes;)

If polish with it hard enough then buff
The my have an amazing shine and mates say when following me that they look v cool and as new
Hint, as inside probably coked up
I used cutting compound /very fine wet&dry to get them clean

Then keep on top of it with auto sol as it leaves a film behind too

Flimper,

You are not far from me, pop round & you can borrow my britemax twins.

I needed something more cutting when I got the car, to get them back to perfect & found these brilliant.

Drop me a PM and you can pick them up, can also lend you a sponge exhaust ball to polish the insides.

Once back to shiny, I use the autosol to keep them shiny, although recent weeks have meant I haven't had the chance

Try AutoFinesse Mercury. The best one I've used (apart from Britemax Twins mentioned above) in 15 years of detailing!

This could also help if they're really mucked up; http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=1429

Can also be had more cheaply on eBay, but takes 28 days from China...!

Thanks very much for the offer, may well take you up on it, cheers

Another vote for Britemax Metal Twins.

If really bad - then Autosol and 00-grade wirewool can re-instate a good shine;
and the britemax twins will easily maintain that look.

You can also look to get a polishing cone accessory for your household drill to help as well.

finally got round to doing mine, spent 2 hours But tbh i dont think theyve ever been cleaned

There was loads of tar on underside, this came off with tardis and a good scrub. Used Meguire NXT metal polish then once cleaned, Used the Autofinesse mercury

Only pic i have before the ends where black

Looks much better on car :)

I use the autoglym metal polish for my pipes...

With elbow greese i think its better than autosol... As it leaves a wax behind to make it easier to clean after.

I tend to spray some wd40 after its clean too.
