DISA Replacement?

Just followed the DISA removal guide to give it a clean, spot on guide!

Firstly noticed that the PIN was very loose and was almost hanging out! I pushed the pin in as hard as i can and it seems to be secure but im not very confident it will stay that way.
Also noticed that the rubber has started to fray and become loose and one one the corners on the plastic flap as chipped off. I have trimmed all the loose rubber...do you think it will ok for a month or so or time for a urgent replacement now? Does any one know how much a brand new on from dealer is? My car is a 2003 3.0i with 97,000 miles

Thanks

I would not risk putting it back in, the penalty for being wrong is just too severe. FYI, I followed a link on here somewhere (can't seem too find it again quickly though) to an outfit offering a repair kit that looked well designed and superior to the original setup. Should be significantly cheaper than full replacement.

OTOH, it took 10 years to fall out once, a month may be OK if you're short on cash, but do not procrastinate getting it fixed proper if you do decide to put it back in.

Don't buy new... get this recon kit - then look for the instructions how to take it apart on YouTube

BMW DISA Valve / Intake Adjuster Unit Aluminium Rebuild / Upgrade 11617544805

I offered £45 for mine & was accepted... Best of luck

The only challenging thing was removing the old red air seal which is almost welded to the plastic. Tiny screwdriver, lots of patience & u will be just fine

Thanks bcworkz / Jembo for the reply.

I found the modification kit and looks impressive but I don't think that will be any good as the rubber sides on the frame are worn and the plastic doesn't look in great shape and the flap spins freely! :(

Will have to ring dealer in the morning for a quote for a new one, found a new one on eBay for £184. I just sucks that last week I paid my insurance in full and tax at the same time. :(

Try Quarry motors, you might get lucky with a second hand one cheap

I had mine replaced on my 2004 Z4 3.0i at Lloyds BMW Blackpool at my last sevice in April 2013 and they charged £164.33 for the complete new DISA unit and £26.67 to fit it (just had a look at the bill to check). You need to add 20% VAT to this as well. Quite reasonable, in my opinion and they always look after you (that's why I go there, rather than to my local dealer in Derby who are not at all interested in looking after private owners of older cars).
Knackered DISA made my Z4 sound like a tappety old Austin when it went in (it was so worryingly rattly that I pulled the power plug out of it just beforehand), but it sounded as smooth as new afterwards and the car seemed a bit perkier.
Didn't want to try a DIY fix since the consequences of bits of metal and plastic going into the combustion chambers isn't worth thinking about! (Also, I have to admit, because I'm not much of a DIY mechanic anyway!)

Forgot to add, as they are official BMW dealer, the part and it's fitting is guaranteed for 2 years. Seems like a better bet than ebay to me, but Blackpool is a long way from Lincolnshire! Other people on here seem to rave about Sopers BMW in Lincolnshire, so maybe they can pricematch Lloyds BMW?
Anyway, good luck and you'll be amazed how smooth your car sounds afterwards!

Got a few quotes...
£197.20 from Sopers BMW Lincoln (including postage and VAT)
£217 from Astle BMW Grimsby

Ordered from Sopers :) My wallet isn't very happy this month! :P

My car sounds fine, just occasionally get a sort of whistling noise when accelerating, though I have had my car a year now and it made that noise when I bought it so never thought much of it....

Driving my car to work as it is my only vehicle, 12 miles each way until my new part arrives, just hope that stupid pin stays in place :(

Thanks again guys for the help and advice! :D

For the whistling noise check the air intake hose near the disa. There is a small convolute tube on the side which splits and causes a whistle on gentle throttle.

Disa successfully changed, got posted next day by Sopers. Noticed engine seems smother running and sounds slightly beefier (maybe just in my head) plus more torque :D Also checked that pipe and didn't notice any damage.

Next job I'm changing anti roll bar bushes at the weekend for some polys I have, then need to get around to changing rear diff oil as its got the clonk.

Thanks again guys :)
