DISA Failure? Rough Idle + Rattle noise

On my way in to work this morning I was sitting at a red light and my rpms were just bouncing around, idle was really rough.... i barely put my foot on the gas to accel slowly and i can hear a rattling noise from the engine bay. I pulled over and popped the hood and the rattling noise is coming from the DISA (or in the general area of the DISA). Its a crackle/rattle/ticking noise and all i can think of is the DISA is failing. Im at work and do not have any tools with me. Im prob going to go ahead and order one through my fathers shop so i have a new one by the time i get home just in case that is the problem.

I have a 22mi drive home and I hope it will be fine if i baby it home. Any suggestions on what this might be other than the DISA?

Have you tried uplugging the electrical plug on the DISA to see if it help at all? I have my loose old DISA in the shed and will take it apart in the name of science when I get a spare few hours this weekend :)

Mine was rattling quite bad but had no effect on the engine idle, only trait was the noise and a occasional surge in the 3.5-4.0k rpm range. Since replacing it the engine is much quieter and very smooth, the induction noise in the cabin is also a lot quieter!

The only other suggestions I have for the idling are a faulty coil pack, dodgy air flow meter or a split pipe on the air intake near the throttle butterfly. Any of those could cause similar problems, the split pipes are not uncommon and early cars are thought to have had a dodgy batch of coil packs (I think the bosch ones were ok from memory).

but would a faulty coil pack, dodgy air flow or split pipe cause the rattling?? the rattle noise is coming from the DISA... that i do know for sure... unless its coming from under the DISA.... i dunno. Im leaving work right now.... i'll have to check it out when i get home... if i get home.

It takes 2 seconds to uplug the disa electrical connector on the right hand side, quickly do that before you leave to see if it helps the noise. :)

The other suggestions were primarily for the dodgy idle.

It was the DISA... i'll have to post a picture later. THe shaft that runs through the flap broke at the base.... flap wouldn't close all the way and was just freely hanging... the pin was about half way out by the time i got home....

replaced with a NEW DISA and the car runs smoother than it ever has since i bought it... i was SOOO amazed at how much of a differnce it made. I recommend everyone replace this before 100,000mi. It seriously purs like a brand new ride!! acceleration is soooo much smoother and idles so quiet i cant tell that its running.... amazing!

I had mine mine done by Fairdeal autos in Bathgate, near Edinburgh - ask for Ricky as he is an expert on the marque. Great garage, all honest guys.

It aint good if that pin escapes either

Well worth a new one, and not really worth getting used ones either. Had to do mine in my 330, but what an easy job, well compared to the inlet camshaft sensor. In the Z you have so much more room to play with! Easy
