Direct Line Insurance - W@nkers

same, mine is all over the place. Driving licence at my house in Cornwall, my car was registered at my Dads house in Cornwall, but was insured at my old house in Surrey.

Dont see a problem. Dont think you have to have it registred to the same adress as the insurance do you?

first 2 questions are usually "are you the registered keeper " & "is the car to be kept at your home address " ?
not worth dodging issues when it comes to insurance ,
you would think cover would be offered just heavily loaded in their favour :headbang: as per usual

Some good ideas there Adam but don't waste your time going to ombudsman at this point. He can't make an insurance company give you cover. It is their business decision to offer cover or not regardless of what we might think. I think Adrian flux might be helpful. Andrew yule was other I use but need to speak to someone experienced. Good luck. DO NOT think this is insurmountable. J

I am the registered keeper (Its registered to my name) and it is kept at my home address (yes which i give them) The car isnt registered with the DVLA at the same address(this is an Admin address which i recieve post from, its my dads house), but they havent asked that. They want to know where the car is kept to work out a premium, and ask if im the owner, or have i been interpreting it incorectly?

I've been boycotting direct line since my early 20's (believe me a depressingly long time ago). Every time i needed a quote they'd refuse because it was a young driver in a hot-hatch at the time when these things were getting nicked left, right and centre by joy-riders. They chose to cherry pick and so now that I'm an old fogey with a multi-car policy they want my business. Well Direct Line you can eff off. You will NEVER get my business. Rant over.

From the financial ombudsmans site...

Complaints involving the administration of motor insurance policies

We deal with a significant number of complaints involving the administration of motor insurance policies. These problems may affect many insurance policies and are not unique to motor insurance. They include complaints about:

whether information provided to the intermediary is sent to the other party to the policy;
unexpected changes sought by a broker or intermediary;
the insurer increasing the premium or changing the terms when the policy was renewed;
the insurer cancelling or refusing to renew the policy.

I think the last one applies. You've got nothing to lose by involving them...

so the car is in your name & the logbook is the same but is your parents house where you " technically" reside .
yet you live elsewhere & i assume so does your car ?
what do you say to question 3 when they ask " where is the car kept overnight " ?
on my drive :)
just not the one where the car is registered :D
i,d say you were manipulating the facts but unless there is a claim then no worries

Problem is that Adamski has a Polo too, which I think he's using in Edinburgh... And I assume needs insured too, at the Edinburgh address. If it's a multi-car policy that won't work.

Bummer about your parents Adamski, thought I'd had a 'cut through the crap genius moment' there :(

Try going through an online quote through a comparison site... Most have the option to put a correspondence address and a gargling address. Then phone whichever comoany comes up best to explain the circumstances. My guess is that Direct Line are presuming that you are trying to artificially reduce your premium by registering the garaging address at a lower rated area. Unfortunately the thousands of people who fiddle their insurance in all manner of means spoil it for those for whom there is a genuine reason for 'odd' circumstances.

Direct Line are a shower though. Always have been. Try Chris Knott Insurance... hope you get it sorted quickly!

one would think the insurance company would be delighted that the car lived in a small low accident rate town. As opposed to a large city and it's higher accident/crime rate.

I know that in the US. They just use your post code to look at the crime/accident rate for that area. Then charge accordingly. They worry about where the car lives, Not the owner. Many folks in the states store their play car at a mini storage facility away from their place of residence. In fact. I did just that when I moved from South Dakota to Washington state. Took my Speedster to Walla Walla and put it in storage and returned to South Dakota. Had it there for months till we bought a home. My company had zero issues with this. That's a 1000 mile separation.

No offense is intended. As I like the British people very much. But after all the insurance/Big brother camera issues I see posted here. I'm rather glad the wife didn't take the job offer at Menwith hill and accepted the offer in Germany.

Im not getting this. What do you mean technically?

I live where i tell them i live, and i park the car where i live, in a carpark, not at my parents house. The car is registered with the DVLA at my parents house. These are all facts and thats what i tell them.

Am i doing something wrong here?

In Adamskis case, wont both be on different policies, so can register them at different adresses?

Thanks Rialas. It's the underwriters that are the problem. They can't comprehend that I would keep a car at location A, but live at location B. everything went into meltdown and was cancelled or refused :headbang:

Will give them a try anyway

Last night I sent a lengthy complaint by email to the addresses given in the thread, CC watchdog.

This morning I got a response from Michelle Harris - PA to the RBS Chief Exec. It's being looked into urgently.

Lets see what happens....

I am in the same boat... i have 2 homes, the car is registered in one, my driving license is registered at the other. My london address is a band B insurance area, my Derby one a band C, but most years my Derby address is cheaper to insure at. I dont see any problems with this.

If there was ever a type of company/business where I'm tempted to record all telephone conversations I have with them, it's insurance companies.

Adam, do they not have a telephone record of the original phone call where they verbally agreed to provide the cover? (as you mentioned in your first post). I guess they "conveniently" won't have that recorded though...

If it was me, I'd be very tempted to tell them to stick it and take your business elsewhere. Yes, it might cost a bit more but you can't put a price on integrity IMO. I wouldn't give ANY of my further business to companies who shaft me.

Classicline for me too. Have phoned them up a few times and they have always been very friendly and efficient. Did a change of address this week due to a house move and got the revised certificate the next morning.

Definitely worth a call to them to ask if they can insure at a different address.
