Dinner in Edinburgh - Help needed

Desperately need some local advice and recommendations.

My wife (Whose birthday it is on New Years Day) and I are spending a couple of days including New Year in Edinburgh and had booked The Dome for dinner on New Years Day evening after some very serious recommendations. Very disappointed to now find out that they are only serving a set Christmas menu (You know what I mean) which I am sure would be very nice but not quite the evening I had planned.

Would like a good steak or seafood in nice surroundings with a good bottle of wine. Don't mind paying for it (The Dome was going to cost around £150 with wine) but don't want to be ripped of with miniscule portions either.

Any recommendations?

Good resturant chain, not been to that one but had a couple of good meals in the one in Newcastle

The Witchery is always nice, but probably fully booked...

Gardeners cottage is lovely - but set menu again

dunno if that helps :P

Sorry OP, but when I read the heading of this thread I was expecting it to be from an Edinburghonian who wanted some help cooking his dinner! :exitright: Maybe I need help too, but of a different sort!

Sorry for the distraction, and I hope you find somewhere great.

Mrs Tidy and I spent a few nights there back in 2008 and it is a wonderful place.

I quite liked Rhubarb at Prestonfield House when I went a few years ago. Food was great, not exceptional, but it’s a very “plush” place and will feel quite special if you let someone valet park the car and then start in one of the lounges with a cocktail before being seated. Wine list is epic too, although I think page one of the reds hit £100 and there were many more to browse!

Would like to go to The Kitchin at some point, but I think that’s even more pricey. Rhubarb was a gift so just waiting for another one... :?

Try Martin Wishart not a lot of steak on the menu excellent seafood

Lots of good recomendations, my personal favorite in that part of the woods is “Dubh Prais”, not far from royal mile.
Truly great food and service, not as plush as the modern places but has real charm and yeah really good food and whisky :)

Thanks Guys for the excellent recommendations but the wife has decided on Miller & Carter Edinburgh City. I know it has a good reputation in Newcastle, its just around the corner from where we are staying and we still get to go to the Dome for after dinner cocktails.

Much appreciated and will raise a glass or three to you all.

Although the last time I went was a very long time ago, I loved The Witchery. Great food iwith interesting decor.
