Dilemma on new shape Z4

Dilemma……… my heart says YES and my head says BE careful. I have seen advertised the new shape 09 plate, it’s the 2.3 idrive with the 2.5 engine, the car has a high spec i.e sat nav, bluetooth, nappa leather, heated sport seats and the list goes on ! 12,000 miles on the clock. And seems to be a genuine sale. I know it hasn’t got the raw looks of my present Z4 but is the new Z4 just as fun to drive and are there any bad reports of the car I should know about. I also know that cars do depreciate but was wondering if this model will hold its value over the next year or two or would it be best to wait until the prices do start to drop and then buy one. This one is priced at £25,500 which is the most I would have every paid for a car.

All comments would be gratefully received ……… :)

No it won't hold it's value. Depreciation is a fact of life I'm afraid, the edge is taken off because its worst in the first year of course, but I'd still budget for it to drop at least £5k-£8k in the next 1-2 years. Check out the values of a 4 year old Z4 on Autotrader to get an estimate. 'Waiting for it to drop' depends where you draw the line really, in ten years they will be dirt cheap but will you want it them?

;)

I've driven a few of the new models now and found the 23i surprisingly peppy, very nice to drive. It's not quite as sporty as the old car but it makes up for it in other ways (infinitely better interior, better ride for starters). Its a very good car. I'd be very interested if they do an M Coupe, bupt they don't as yet....

I paid just under £32k for mine (without sat. nav) in May 2010 and now you can buy a similar AUC for around £26k. So I think if I now trade in my car to BMW dealer, it may be only worth £22k. But I never regret. :D

You need a M Sport Model though.

Get old style loaded z4m job done awesome car, will hold value second hand, happy days, save a packet!

I would never buy a new car tbh

i paid 26k for mine knowing it will fall in value, if i kept it it top condition, maybe in 30 years it will be work 26k again, but by then cars will be 100k +

edit: mine is old shape

Thanks guys for some of your input, perhaps the best thing is to go and test drive one at the local BMW garage and see how it feels. I want to stay with the roadster and the M looks great but the tax is twice what I am paying now on my 2.5 and I guess the insurance might scare me to.

Fuel consumption of 23i is about the same as E85 2.5i N52 in real life too (30mpg).

The old Z4 was more go-kart like to drive, much more visceral. The new one is a cruiser.....a fast one, agreed, but a cruiser all the same. That is what BMW intended I believe to snare some of the market from the new shape slk merc.

if i was spending £25.5k on a car (especially in these uncertain times) i would want it to feel and look 'special' for that sort of cash. especially when you think of all the other (although) slightly older cars you could have. The new Z4 just doesnt do it for me for that sort of money (personal opinion)

i agree with the above, a Z4M woudl be my choice and far cheaper.

There is never a best time to buy a new car, Yes it will depreciate but you get a payback for that, like a shiny new car for a start. :D

I tested the 85 and the 89 and they are different alright (IMHO) however if you are paying that amount of money then you are going to be really benefitting (IMHO  )
You’d be getting a newer, lower mileage and less used car with tighter mechanics
A nicer drive (IMHO) (like petach says more cruiser) :driving:
But the cruiser benefits are a better gearbox, smoother engine, smoother ride for sure and boy is the interior finally up to the standard it deserves (have you sat in one yet?) Anyone that doubts the dramatic difference of the new interior should get in one first B4 commenting; especially the design interior in cream / white.
Much better looks (IMHO) OH yes you will be looked at more in the 89 for sure :titshake: :flyboyaj: :dance2:
Benefits of it having the looks of a Coupe yet the dramatic folding roof and roadster effect too
Plus all the other fitments like you mentioned, heated seats, Nappa, Bluetooth etc.

I’d say go for it, you only live once :cpilot:

Hi iwatchlive, yes I have just taking one out for a test drive this morning at our local BMW gargage and found the gearbox was much smoother plus when I got back into mine the clutch felt really heavy. The interior has improved greatly, nicely laid out too, slightly more room in the cabin with extra compartments and more head room. Took the 2.5 version out and it performers very well, plenty of power there and handled great too. I was impressed with the car and I must admit I do like the styling too, its now down to do I do the deed or not........I'm very tempted at the moment :)
