Digital Cluster

OK so I know it's been brought up before about replacing the current cluster with a digital version and the ID4Motion one has been posted here, along with it's hefty £1000 price tag, well we'll soon have access to a cheaper version that'll do, almost, the same thing.
So although it's not for the E89 cluster I've posted a photo of what one will look like (E89 version still in development at the moment). As you can see it has the ultra-modern BMW digital style to it and not a digital analogue look like the ID4Motion one (the modern style is available at more expense from ID4Motion!).
Price should be around $600 to $700, but is it something you'd like?

Oh and just for the techy's, it's NOT Android based but is using the Linux platform.

Not for me. They look confusing IMHO. Much prefer the 'virtual dash', it looks traditional but has more features.

Im sure the last time I saw these they were not an easy fit and a bit of the dash had to be butchered to install it.

Sorry to be an old fart but I prefer the ones that come with the cars, easy to read and more reliable. I've seen somewhere that the audi ones when wrong. One thing I would like in my e85 would be to have the speedo on the right and the rev counter on the left, very confusing going from Fords to BMW.

That was the ID4Motion cluster, apparently these ones are a straight swap. The reason that the ID4Motion ones needed to have the aperture cut was because they just used an "off-the-shelf" rectangular LCD panel instead of actually designing something, so you £1000 price tag is mainly going towards paying for the software!
Here's a photo of this new E9x cluster and as you'll see it's the same shape as a standard BMW cluster, so no cutting required.

I personally have been perving over these for some time .
It’s definitely on my mods ( to do ) list .
Hopefully next year after I’ve done the other bits on the list .
Definitely a like 👍 from me

Not possible for the E85? Nobody seems to do one, but they do for the E46 which is the same car underneath. Anyone know why?

Will be interesting to see what renditions they offer in s/w eg ‘classic’ ‘g29’ etc?

Looks interesting Dave, are they from the same guy Milo you put me onto that does the android I bought ?

Yes its Milo, i'll post up more info when I have any

Hi Dave,

Pencil me in as interested, especially if there are easy to select options if you fancy a different look.

I’m one of odd ones that don’t mind the new look G20 (I do have one of those too Tbf) so will be keen to see how this turns out.

And if it’s that plug and play then if it turns out i don’t like it then hopefully it would be straight swap out again.

Charlie.

I wish there was a (digital) cluster for everyday driving, and for that matter the stock cluster is fine, and then a (digital) cluster for Sport+, with only speed, RPM and gear in large font. Dave, does your cluster do something like that? Thanks.

This might be a stupid question but hey ho, what happens with the mileage reading after changing the cluster to one of these?
Does the mileage automatically show the correct reading, does the cluster get the info from somewhere else?

The CAS module and the display module hold the mileage….I’m assuming they code the new module as ‘new’ which AFAIK then allows the CAS to update the new display and avoid ‘red dot’ syndrome..not sure there is a red dot area in the display…

Thanks, I take it then if you were to swap the cluster for a few thousand miles and then put the original back in it would still show the correct mileage then, as in the updated mileage.

Looking these babies up it appears that there are several tinted renditions of a ‘G29’ type display only…ie no ‘classical’ display variants…

That’s the theory…that’s what would happen if you installed a new BMW cluster

Sorry guys, alas I have no further info at the moment.
I've not seen any other display options, and the mileage is, as stated above, stored in the CAS which transfers it to the cluster.
I will ask regarding swapping it back to stock about the tamper dot, as you wouldn't want that. But in theory as it still contains your VIN then it "should" be OK.

I'll try to get a video of one in actual use.
